VfB Stuttgart wins 3-1 against newly promoted Darmstadt at the start of the 5th matchday. Once again Guirassy was the decisive man. The Swabians didn’t allow themselves to be deterred by a surprising deficit (Zagadou’s own goal) – and turned the game around.

When the best offense hosts the worst defense, then you expect a one-goal game – and that was also the case with Stuttgart against Darmstadt. VfB, who had started unchanged after winning 3-1 at 1. FSV Mainz 05, dominated the game right from the start – the first goal seemed to be only a matter of time.

It was all the more surprising that in the 17th minute the Lilies, who had started with Riedel and Honsak instead of Maglica (red card) and Kempe compared to the 3-3 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach, were celebrating. Around ten minutes after the equalizer, Stuttgart rewarded themselves for the effort they put in. Guirassy turned around after receiving the ball and nailed the ball into the top right corner from 17 meters (32′). His ninth goal of the season was also the half-time score because the attacker was no longer able to decisively deflect a Stenzel cross (39th).

Even after the break, VfB remained dominant and had the next good opportunities through Guirassy and Silas (both 53′). Darmstadt became a little more courageous, but the offensive power and speed were mostly lacking.

After a lightning-fast one-two from Führich and Guirassy, ​​which the former placed in the right corner, the VAR reported and recognized that Guirassy was offside (63′) – the goal was conceded. Only four minutes later, Guirassy failed after the next good move because of a long standing pair of shoes (67′), as did Millot after Guirassy’s fine lay-off (69′).

However, substitute Undav left the door open for Darmstadt after Guirassy’s cross pass (80′). In stoppage time, Guirassy finally put the lid on it. After a pass from Stenzel, the attacker lobbed over his shoes (90th + 2). The goal was initially disallowed due to offside, but here too the VAR called in, this time in favor of VfB.

In this way, VfB is extending one series and ending another. There have been no home defeats under Sebastian Hoeneß (four wins, three draws) and at the eighth attempt Stuttgart finally won again against promoted teams.
