The veteran quarterback will start the Week 3 game against the Seahawks due to the rookie’s ankle injury

Andy Dalton will be the Carolina Panthers’ starting quarterback Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks after rookie Bryce Young was ruled out with a sprained ankle.

Jake Luton will be the replacement for Andy Dalton.

Panthers head coach Frank Reich indicated that they expect Bryce Young to be out a week or two and so his status for the Week 4 game against the Minnesota Vikings is uncertain. Reich said he is “optimistic” that Bryce Young will be able to play against the Vikings after making progress in his rehabilitation.

“Bryce has done well this week,” Reich said. “I feel optimistic that they are going in the right direction. He will be back as soon as possible and when he comes back he will be our guy.”

Bryce Young attended practice on Friday and walked on the field without a boot. He will travel with the team to Seattle.

Bryce Young was the No. 1 pick in the draft and ranks 31st in passer rating through two games. He has completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns, with two interceptions and a fumble.

Reich trusts Andy Dalton and considered him one of “the best 32 quarterbacks in the NFL.”

“He’s playing at a high level,” Reich acknowledged. “The way he throws the ball, how he works the progressions, how he has played from day one and I say that he deserves to be a starter.”

Andy Dalton is 3-1 against the Seahawks, including 1-1 on the road.

This will be the 163rd start for Andy Dalton.

In his 13-year career, he has an 83-77-2 record as a starter with the Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints. He has thrown for 244 touchdowns and 144 interceptions.

The Panthers are last in the league in passing, but face a defense with Seattle (1-1) that has struggled and ranks 31st in yards allowed and 29th in points allowed.
