Dresden. The Veolia Towers Hamburg were only able to avert an exit in the Basketball Bundesliga Cup with great difficulty.

The first division team narrowly prevailed against the second division team Dresden Titans in the first round with 88:85 (53:39) and made up for a seven-point deficit in the final quarter. At halftime, the North Germans were still ahead by 14 points, but gave the lead back in a weak third quarter. The best Hamburg thrower was Aleksander Dziewa with 19 points.

The Bamberg Baskets, on the other hand, had little trouble against the Artland Dragons from Quakenbrück. The Franconians won against the former first division team with 78:67 (38:31). The best scorer for the guests was Zach Copeland with 26 points. Hamburg and Bamberg will now meet in the round of 16.

On Saturday, two first division teams failed at the start: the Rostock Seawolves (76:84 in Vechta) and the Hakro Merlins Crailsheim (73:79 in Gießen). For the first time in 14 years, second division teams are involved in the cup again. The top teams in the Bundesliga still enjoy a bye in the first round.
