VC Wiesbaden has a future in the volleyball Bundesliga

The probability of being able to see first-class volleyball in Wiesbaden in the coming season has increased to 90:10 – at least according to Christopher Fetting’s gut feeling, which in turn can be based on numbers. The managing director of VC Wiesbaden exuded confidence in the season opening game against the Belgian team VDK Bank Gent on Tuesday. Just a week earlier, Fetting only saw a 50:50 chance because of his club’s financial problems.

The change in mood was caused by good news about money: initially, the city council of Wiesbaden had agreed to grant the cash-strapped club a guarantee of 200,000 euros in order to secure the licensing for the upcoming Bundesliga season. Then the crowdfounding got off to a good start with the citizens of the wealthy Hesse state capital. After ten hours, 16,000 euros had already been received, and overnight the sum had increased to 21,000.

And then it was clear on the floor that the players believe in their future in Wiesbaden. Although a few concerned agents contacted Fetting, none of them quickly found a new employer for their client. Conversely, there were positive reasons why the VCW had to become active again, even if it affected the sporting concept. Setter Natalia Gajewska – around whom coach Bene Frank built the team – is pregnant. Thanks to the coach’s good contacts in the scene, we were able to sign a new player within a week.

The Bosnian Milana Bosic directed the game against Gent – and from the first impression, the 23-year-old has already developed a good understanding of the game with her teammates. The four-set test match ended with a 4-0 win for the VCW – and coach Frank was also “satisfied” with the performance of his ensemble, in which four players from the old squad formed the framework: Rachel Anderson and Nina Herelová in the middle block, Tanja Großer on the outside and Libera René Sain. Izabella Rapacz on diagonal and Jaidyn Blanchfield (outside) also showed their potential. 800 spectators took advantage of the opportunity to check out their new team with free admission. And there was good news for the drivers among them: parking in the parking garage under the hall was also free – although not because of the general mood of donations, but because of a technical defect.
