Defending champions at the US Open: who won last year?

The defending champion for men is Carlos Alcaraz. The Spaniard won the final of the US Open against the Norwegian Casper Ruud last year. Alcaraz is also one of the favorites at the US Open 2023 and is currently leading the men’s world rankings. Not only there Novak Djokovic is on his heels. If the Serb canceled his participation in the US Open last year, most likely due to a lack of Covid vaccination, he should be eyeing the title again this year. Djokovic has already won the US Open three times and has been in the final nine times. Alcaraz and Djokovic have already met in the final of another Grand Slam tournament this year: In Wimbledon, the Spaniard Alcaraz emerged victorious from the duel.

In the women’s category, Iga Swiatek is the defending champion. Last year the player from Poland defeated Ons Jabeur from Tunisia in the final. And Swiatek competed again this year to retain her title. As the first in the world rankings, her chances weren’t too bad either – in the round of 16, however, she had to admit defeat to Jelena Ostapenko. Incidentally, Emma Raducanu, who won the US Open 2021, is not on the list of participants this year. The 20-year-old had to pause due to injuries and operations.
