Uruguay fell 38-17 to Italy in Nice for the third round of group A of the Rugby World Cup, in which it was the second presentation of two teams that already had a rest day. The Azzurri team crushed Namibia 52-8 in their debut on Saturday the 9th in Saint-Étienne, while Los Teros fell to France 27-12 five days later in Lille.

The Argentine coach who leads Uruguay, Esteban Meneses, made two changes compared to the 15 of the debut: Germán Kessler will replace Guillermo Pujadas in the hooker position and the winger Gastón Tone Mieres will enter for Bautista Basso. On the Italian side there were four variants regarding the debut: Simone Ferrari, Dino Lamb, Stephen Varney and Luca Morisi left, and Marco Riccioni, Niccolo Cannone, Alessandro Garbisi and Lorenzo Pani entered.

After 6 minutes, Italy managed to open the scoring with a try, after a scrum, by Lorenzo Pani, a decision that took time to be made due to an extensive review at the TMO, but the judges understood that the ball did not escape him before; Tommaso Allan scored the conversion and went 7-0 up.

At 26′, Niccolo Cannone saw the yellow card, so he had to watch the next 10 minutes from the sidelines. The Teros took advantage of that situation and Manuel Ardao supported the ball to score the try, which was awarded as a penalty try for a collapse in the maul after being reviewed, for Uruguay a few seconds after the sanction to the Italians and tied the game at 7. Danilo Fischetti saw yellow after that and Italy were two men down.

At 36′, Uruguay fought to get a new try and, after insisting, Santiago Arata opened for Felipe Etcheverry and this for wing Nicolás Freitas, who achieved it. Etcheverry took charge of the conversion and put the light blues up 14-7. At the end of the first half, Etcheverry scored with a drop shot and Los Teros went into halftime winning 17-7.

At the beginning of the second half, Andrés Vilaseca received a yellow card. Then, in the 46th minute, Michele Lamaro scored the ball and scored for Italy, while Tommaso Allan made the conversion to put them 17-14 down. At 52′, Montanna Ioane put Italy ahead with a try and Allan scored with the conversion (21-17). They did not stop there, since at 55′ Lorenzo Cannone supported and Allan extended (28-17).

Italy did not stop and at 61′ Ignacio Brex scored a new try and Allan scored the conversion to extend the lead to 35-17. Paolo Garbisi stretched the difference by three more points in the 70th minute with a penalty. The Teros fought and were close to scoring, but it was not enough and the victory went to the Europeans by figures of 38-17.

After the duel with Italy, which is five places higher in the world ranking (12th), Uruguay (17th) will play again on Wednesday the 27th at 12:45 in Lyon against Namibia (21st), the weakest rival in the group, and will close its performance on Thursday, October 5 with New Zealand (4th) also in Lyon. With this result, Italy is the leader with 10 points, while Los Teros has not yet added units.
