Uncle Toni Nadal Criticizes Current Tennis Generation: ‘Disappointing Level of Top Players’

Heavy sweep from Toni Nadal (62)!

The uncle and former coach of tennis superstar Rafael Nadal (37/22 Grand Slam victories) is tough on today’s tennis generation and makes a tough judgment.

In his column for the Spanish daily newspaper “El País” he writes: “With the exception of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, the level of the top players is disappointing.”

The Spaniard Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open last year and became the youngest world number one in tennis history.

Nadal continues: “Stars used to be much more competitive. The top tennis players a few years ago were better than what we have today.”

Uncle Toni also names some prominent names: “Without a doubt, Nadal would beat Medvedev, Murray would be better than Zverev and Wawrinka better than Ruud.”

In addition, Juan Martín del Potro (34) would beat the Russian Andrey Rublev (25 / No. 8 in the world) and David Ferrer (41) the young Dane Holger Rune (20 / No. 4 in the world).

His reason for the criticism: “The speed at which people play today means that many mistakes are made, that it is much easier to lose the thread.”

This makes it much more difficult to “play different tournaments well” and there are “too many of these surprising defeats”. These are all important factors in the increasing volatility of many players.

Even record Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic (37/23 titles) is not left out!

Nadal writes about the Serb: “Today’s Djokovic is significantly worse than Djokovic five or ten years ago.”

Djokovic has just set an unbelievable record. He is now in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the 47th (!) time. No one has ever done that before him. He is also the oldest US Open semifinalist since Jimmy Connors (then 39) 32 years ago.

Until 2017, Toni Nadal coached his nephew Rafael on the ATP tour and accompanied three of Rafa’s four titles at the US Open during their time together.
