Triathlon: Frenchman Dorian Coninx crowned world champion

An incredible scenario and a new world champion title for the French triathlon team! By finishing in first place in the Grand Final of the World Triathlon Championship Series (Editor’s note: the World Cup circuit), Dorian Coninx won his first world champion title at the age of 29. He succeeds his compatriot Léo Bergère, crowned in 2022 in Abu Dhabi and finally third overall this season.

“I thought it was impossible,” the Poissy Triathlon member admitted afterwards at the World Triathlon microphone. I just wanted to have a good race. I’ve had a great season already, and it went even better than I imagined.”

In the top 10 at the end of the 1,500m swim, Coninx took the lead from A to Z, alongside his compatriots Pierre Le Corre and Léo Bergère, respectively third and fourth in the day’s race and with whom he was able to collaborate by bike. “We tried to make an effort on the bike, we wanted to try something as a team,” continued the Grenoblois. Hayden Wilde and Alex Yee have really dominated this season, I had some great races but I didn’t expect to come out on top today.”

Only fifth in the general classification at the start of the event, the Frenchman took advantage of the failures of the last two named, who were struggling in swimming and who did not manage to return to the lead at the end. 40 km cycling and 10 km running. Tom Richard, the fourth Frenchman entered in this final, took 12th place.

Pierre Le Corre takes a big step towards Paris

“I tried to win but it was impossible for me. Dorian was incredible today, I am very happy for him,” added Pierre Le Corre. “It’s great to have a new world champion title and to add it to the French collection,” smiled Léo Bergère. I tried on the last lap but I couldn’t follow at the end, I didn’t have the energy to get the better of the others.”

With these three French people in the top 4, the Blues achieved an impressive group shot like what they achieved in Paris in August during the Test Event. Dorian Coninx took third place in the race, ahead of Le Corre and Bergère, 4th and 5th.

With this podium, Pierre Le Corre achieves a second-rank selection criterion in the race for qualification for 2024. A result which, coupled with his performance last August, is a few months before the Paris Games.
