As a year 2004, he will fit into the next cycle of twenty-one, but coach Jan Suchopárek has already pointed to him. “I was hoping it might work out,” Ambros recounts. “It’s my first meeting with twenty-one, and hopefully I’ll show up so it won’t be my last.”
He came to his home region from Freiburg, where he has been visiting from Wolfsburg since the first day of September. He spent the last three years in the city of cars: from boarding school he made it all the way to the Bundesliga, he got 16 minutes against Leipzig in February. And that immediately became a record, at the age of 18 years, 8 months and 13 days, he became the historically youngest Czech in the Bundesliga.
But then he only played in the 19th team again, which is why he gave the nod to Freiburg. The offensive midfielder is supposed to gain experience in the third league B. “I take it as taking one step back and then maybe two steps forward. It’s very nice in Wolfsburg, but there’s also a lot of competition, a lot of new players have arrived,” says Ambros. “I probably wouldn’t get as much space as I would like, so agent Martin Krob and I thought it would be best to try somewhere else.”
There were more interested parties in the summer, but the courtship failed each time due to minimal game practice in men’s football. “I trained with Wolfsburg’s A team for eight months, so I’m used to the German pace, but of course there is a difference between training and matches. In Freiburg, we also talked about an A, but nothing is certain going forward. It will depend purely on how I do in B,” explains Ambros, who managed a half-hour episode against Essen (0:2) at the weekend. “The first match? I had only been to one training session before, but I felt comfortable and confident. It’s just a shame about the defeat, after five rounds we only have two points and we’re last.”
By the way, David Jurásek, who, like Ambros, comes from Dolní Němčí, a village not far from Uherské Hradiště, also changed his address in the summer. Both also went through Slovácko and Slavia, from where Juráska drew Benfica Lisbon. “I wished him very much. We have the same agent, so I was wondering if possible how the transfer was going. In the end, it turned out wonderful, Juras got a super club and a super destination,” bows Ambros.
At the age of nineteen, he could make his debut in the cozy arena in Uherské Hradiště, the Lvíčats are waiting for the general for Tuesday’s start of the European qualification in Iceland. “Everyone will come, family and acquaintances,” Ambros is looking forward to. “Hopefully it will be an offensive game and a lot of goals will be scored. We would also like to win so that we can go into the qualification more calmly.”
