The future of the national coach is open, the assistant coach is defending herself and coming to terms with the World Cup failure is becoming classified information: the women’s national team is a construction site

Frankfurt – Of course, in the past it would have been a given for Martina Voss-Tecklenburg to go to Freiburg on Friday. The national coach not only watched the Bundesliga opening game between SC Freiburg and FC Bayern in the Dreisamstadion (Friday 6.15 p.m./ZDF), but she also took part in the official kick-off event in Hinterzarten. And in the preparation of the national team at the DFB campus for the new Nations League games against Denmark (September 22nd) and Iceland (September 26th), she might have included a trip to the Lerchenberg in Mainz to the ZDF studio to appear as a Champions League expert on Wednesday. But the power woman has long since been unplugged.

Voss-Tecklenburg returned from the World Cup sick – big question marks

His wife had been physically and mentally exhausted for a long time and was resting at home, her husband Herrmann reported. The 55-year-old had already returned from the World Cup sick. In fact, “MVT” wasn’t looking good when she asserted at her very last press conference in Wyong: “I’ve never run away when things get tough. I remain stubborn and strong.” To observers, she appeared to have aged years. The historic World Cup defeat took its toll on her.

It is now unclear whether she will return to the coaching bench. DFB President Bernd Neuendorf said on ARD: “We know that Martina Voss-Tecklenburg is currently ill, so respect and care dictate that we not speculate about it.” They will sit down together in due course. It cannot be ruled out that it will result in a clean separation in order to avoid unnecessary ballast for all parties. What is certain is that, as in France in 2019, there were dissonances with the players.

Was there a player survey about Voss-Tecklenburg?

But the fact that assistant Britta Carlson started a survey that showed that German soccer players spoke out against Voss-Tecklenburg is not true. Carlson expressly contradicted this and even saw this as questioning her long-standing integrity as an assistant coach: She had conducted “confidential individual discussions” with Michael Urbansky “on behalf of” the national coach. It was also about the players’ views on the World Cup. “We think this self-critical approach is the right approach,” wrote the 45-year-old. Carlson, who doesn’t actually see herself in the front row for the long term, has called up the well-known group for the start of the Olympic qualification, which will meet in Frankfurt immediately after the first Bundesliga matchday.

To date, no one has spoken openly about the deeper causes of the World Cup disaster. In times of crisis, the protagonists in women’s football like to behave as if they were in a nature reserve where no one should disturb anyone. Not even trace elements of the announced World Cup analysis have reached the public. Although President Neuendorf had many discussions, he did not watch a minute of the World Cup on site; Secretary General Heike Ullrich only watched the final. They only heard about the discord surrounding the DFB women through third parties.

Silence and lack of support from the DFB?

For example, about the unfortunate division of the World Cup squad into two groups – the regulars and the substitutes. From this, there is some whispering within the league and consultant scene about a supposed preference for the Wolfsburg women. Tobias Trittel from VfL Wolfsburg, spokesman for the DFB Women’s Bundesliga Committee, remains silent on this.

Not having an opinion is also a characteristic of DFB Vice President Sabine Mammitzsch, who is responsible for women’s football, and who proved to be the wrong choice in her role as World Cup delegation leader. The national coach in Australia would have needed support with the many construction sites. Martina Voss-Tecklenburg ultimately had to sort out a lot of things on her own – and paid a high price for it.
