The Thrills of Retirement: Roger Federer Reflects on Life After Professional Tennis

The 2023 Laver Cup in Vancouver was dominated by Team World. Roger Federer, who first followed the game as a retiree, spoke to Eurosport about his feelings since retiring from professional sport.

«I miss the adrenaline. “Secretly you like being the center of attention,” Federer admitted. He also misses the ovations and happy faces of the fans.

But despite everything, he is happy with his retirement: “The tour was good for me. I loved her. But now I’m happy with retirement.”

After saying goodbye to big tennis at the Laver Cup 2022, Federer enjoyed this year’s competition from a new perspective – as a spectator in the stands next to tennis legend Rod Laver.

“We talked about the volleys and the doubles and what it was like in the 60s and 70s,” said Federer about his conversations with the 85-year-old Laver.

His anticipation for the next Laver Cup in Berlin is already palpable: “I can hardly wait to go there.” He is also hoping for some well-known faces such as Novak Djokovic and Alcaraz to take part. «I would really like to see that. Sascha Zverev would be great for the German market,” he added.

«Medvedev would be great. (…) And maybe someone will make their breakthrough,” said Federer, giving European fans hope for further success at the Laver Cup, which has been held since 2017 and has been won by Europe four times so far.
