This year’s Vuelta a España will be remembered for the large number of incidents. When night fell in Barcelona, Evenepoel’s accident after crossing the finish line, the helicopter that knocked down several barriers… And this Thursday another one, the fight between a Jumbo assistant and a National Police officer at the finish line.
Given this latest misfortune, one of the most senior assistants in the peloton has criticized “the regrettable treatment” that is being given to these professionals during the Vuelta. “Our job is to ensure the cyclist’s absolute well-being, that includes serving without being scolded by police officers who we feel are completely unaware of our role at the finish line,” says Cristian Alonso, Ineos Grenadier assistant, who has already worked in 23 editions. of the Spanish round and 51 three-week races.
Cristian explains that a cyclist at a finish line “is someone extremely vulnerable”, especially “in a high finish.” For this reason, he maintains that “we cannot be treated by police members as if we were spectators who jump the fence.”
“In my career I have never seen the attitude that I am seeing and suffering towards us in this Vuelta,” he concludes.
