The NBA Introduces Player Participation Policies: What You Need to Know

The NBA has approved a new regulation to control the rest of its star players, especially in high-profile games or those that will be broadcast on national television. The new regulations, called Player Participation Policies (PPP), come with the aim of preventing the competition’s superstars from being absent from matches and seeks two objectives: that there are no double breaks, and that the stars do not miss the most important matches. And here we explain in detail everything you need to know to understand the new NBA rule and how it may affect players.

First of all, two concepts must be made clear. The first, the definition of a star. The NBA has used a scale: having been an All Star or All NBA in one of the last three seasons. The second, these regulations affect players who do not have any injuries and fight against the famous load management, but cannot control the number of injuries that certain stars suffer during the regular season.

In 2017/18 the NBA created Player Resting Policies (PRP), regulations that prohibited stars from resting in important games. The main rule was that multiple stars could not be rested in the same game without injury, or stars could not be played away from home. If they failed to comply with the PRP, the teams were fined up to $100,000. All of them have become obsolete with the arrival of the PPP: from now on the NBA regulates when and where teams can rest their stars and, above all, the fines have increased. First sanction, the $100,000 is maintained; in the second, it rises to $250,000. From the third, there is an increase of one million dollars for non-compliance. Directly affecting the owners’ pockets.

A team CANNOT rest two stars in the same game (unless both are injured). If, for example, Kawhi Leonard is injured, Paul George will not be able to take the game off. The stars will have to be available in national TV matches unless injured. Teams will have to rest their stars more at home than away from home. One of the objectives is that fans in each NBA city can see the majority of stars. A team is not going to be allowed to release a player in March because the team is already tanking. No long-term shutdowns. Rested players must be visible and present to fans, and be on the bench if there is no injury.

With this, the NBA seeks to give more importance to the regular season and the most important games of the year. At the same time, it prioritizes matches on national television and in the new in-season tournament, minimizes the double absence of stars and a section that will be important from now on, is transparent with the bets. Next year the NBA is expected to take in $167 million from advertising in betting houses, casinos and the like. With this regulation, any suspicion of affecting what happens in Las Vegas is avoided. They also join the regulations of playing a minimum of 65 games (and 20 minutes per game) to be able to access individual prizes.

Which players are affected?

In total there are 49, divided into 15 different teams. Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves, with four each, will have the most work to regulate their breaks with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and Chris Paul, and Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns, Anthony Edwards and Mike Conley respectively . These are the other thirteen teams with at least one affected player, ordered from most to least players. Among those who are not on the list and are expected to continue resting, Klay Thompson, Jamal Murray, Kristaps Porzingis or Khris Middleton. Nor are Russell Westbrook, D’Angelo Russell or Brandon Ingram, despite having been an All Star recently.

Chicago Bulls: DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic Cleveland Cavaliers: Donovan Mitchell, Jarret Allen and Darius Garland Phoenix Suns: Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant Atlanta Hawks: Trae Young and Dejounte Murray Boston Celtics: Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown Dallas Mavericks: Kyrie Irving and Luka Doncic LA Clippers: Kawhi Leonard and Paul George LA Lakers: LeBron James and Anthony Davis Memphis Grizzlies: Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. Miami Heat: Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo Milwaukee Bucks: Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday Philadelphia 76ers : Joel Embiid and James Harden Sacramento Kings: Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox Brooklyn Nets: Ben Simmons Charlotte Hornets: LaMelo Ball Denver Nuggets: Nikola Jokic Houston Rockets: Fred VanVleet Indiana Pacers: Tyrese Haliburton New Orleans Pelicans: Zion Williamson New York Knicks : Julius Randle Oklahoma City Thunder: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Portland Trail Blazers: Damian Lillard Toronto Raptors: Pascal Siakam Utah Jazz: Lauri Markkanen

The list will be updated after the 2024 All Star, adding new names (and deleting those who were only All Star in 2021). But there will be exceptions. Despite how strict the NBA has become, they have created a list with possible cases in which, with permission, the rule may be broken, especially on backs-to-backs, nights of consecutive games. To do this, the team will have to request pre-approval for players who meet one of the following requirements:

35 years or older on the day the regular season begins
Have played more than 34,000 minutes in their NBA career in the regular season
Whether the player has a previous or unusual injury history.

There are only eight players who firmly meet the requirements: Chris Paul, Mike Conley, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, DeMar Derozan and James Harden. They may ask to rest in back-to-back games and in some cases, if both games are on national television, they could even miss a high-profile game. And the NBA plans to get serious, investigating cases in which a player misses a national television or tournament game for no apparent reason, when two stars miss the same game or if there is contradictory information about the health status of someone. player from a franchise.

Why this new rest regulation?

There is a reason behind every decision by the league. In this case, as we have previously said, the aim is to give more visibility to the regular season and to grow the public image of the competition, giving value to the games that will be broadcast on TNT, ESPN and any other national platform. Coincidentally, at the end of the next campaign, the television agreement that the league has with all of them expires, and it is time to look for a new contract, from which billions of dollars are expected, surpassing the current one. That is why the big problem has not even been thought about: reducing the number of games.

Because that would also affect the players’ pockets. The salary cap is calculated as a percentage of the league’s basketball-related income each year, exactly 44.7%. If four, six or eight games were subtracted from the season, that figure would drop by 5 or 7%, affecting the players’ salaries. In addition, there is an important detail that also benefits them: in case of non-compliance with the rule, the penalty must be paid by the teams, not the player. Although historically, and except in very specific cases, generally the decision to rest a star does not come from the players, but from the technical staff and the medical department. Starting this year they will need the approval of the owner and his pocket.
