The leaders of the Príncipe de Asturias will defend their positions in the final day

The Vigo estuary lived this Saturday an exciting but complicated second day of competition of the 38th Prince of Asturias Trophy, organized by the Monte Real Club de Yates de Baiona and the Naval Military School with the sponsorship of ABANCA, and which has resulted in changes in the general and new leaders who aspire to be proclaimed winners of the prestigious regatta. Aceites Abril, Urbapaz, Cinco Islas Albariño, Bonaventure, Argalleiro, Hotel Princesa Yaiza and Erizana are the seven teams that will defend the first position in their respective categories on Sunday.

As the weather forecast pointed out, the wind conditions were completely different this Saturday from those of Friday. The south-westerly wind that prevailed during the first day gave way to a north-westerly wind of about nine knots on average that ended up turning more and more northwards, causing changes and modifications to the course in the last tests of the day before the arrival of a shower that complicated the end of the day.

Aceites Abril storms the lead in the ABANCA ORC 1-2 class

In the ABANCA ORC 1-2 class, the second day has helped Aceites Abril to assault the general leadership and position itself with two points ahead of the final day.

The team led by the brothers Luis and Jorge Pérez Canal, who was third yesterday, added two firm victories this Saturday that allowed the boat from the Real Club Náutico de Vigo to take the lead in the general standings ahead of the Syone Panther of Nuno Neves of the Association Naval de Lisboa, which happens to be second. Julio Rodríguez’s Magical, for its part, also dropped one position this Saturday and is now in the third drawer of the provisional podium.

With these results, everything seems to indicate that it will be Aceites Abril and Syone Panther that will play for the final title of the Prince on Sunday, although it is the first that starts with the best chances, having a two-point advantage over those from Neves.

Urbapaz remains in the lead in the Aceites Abril ORC 3-4 class

There were no changes at the head of the Aceites Abril ORC 3-4 fleet. Francisco Edreira’s Urbapaz (CN Cabanas), which opened on Friday with two partial victories, added a fourth and a third this Saturday that allowed the team to maintain the provisional overall lead.

The two victories of the day were shared by Ramón Ojea’s Sailway (CM Canido), which continues in second place, and Víctor Carrión’s Bon III (CN Punta Lagoa), which rises to third place tied on points with fourth classified, the Adegas Terrae de Vicente Cid (RCN Vigo).

The two divisions of Open and ORC 5 debut with a coastal one

Three new categories came into play on Saturday – the Gadis ORC 5, Volvo Autesa Open 1 and SH Robotic Open 2 classes – to complete a seventeen-mile coastal regatta that would open its markers in this thirty-eighth edition of the Príncipe de Asturias.

In the Gadis ORC 5 class, the Cinco Islas Albariño of the Club Náutico de Beluso, skippered by Iñaki Carbajo, won both in real time and in compensated time, scoring a reversed time of four hours and nineteen minutes. They are followed in general by Roberto Telle’s Aquilón del Monte Real and third is the Salao del Liceo Marítimo de Bouzas with Juan Carlos Sicre at the helm.

In the Volvo Autesa Open 1 class, the Bonaventure of José Luis Ríos (RCN Vigo) took the day’s victory ahead of the Salseiro of Manuel Blanco (RCN Coruña) and the Portuguese Javitudo of Sergio Castel (CV Atlántico). , which occupy the second and third position respectively; while in the SH Robotic Open 2 class the provisional lead goes to the hands of Fernando Otero’s Argalleiro (RCM Aguete). Behind, Otero’s men are followed by Fernando Rey’s Albarellos (MRCYB) in second place and Luis Bodelón’s Villano (RCN Coruña) is third.

The Hotel Princesa Yaiza, new leader in Solventis J80

A great day for the Canarian Hotel Princesa Yaiza by Rayco Tabarés. After a discreet start, the Real Club Náutico de Arrecife boat improved this Saturday and took two partial victories and a tenth place -partial that becomes his discard-, positioning himself as the new leader of the general standings tied on points with Solintal by Ignacio Camino (RCM Santander), who until now had been in first place and moved up to second with a third, an eleventh and a sixth scored.

The only partial victory of the day that Tabarés’ team did not take, the third, was for José Azqueta’s Basque Biobizz, seventh overall. In the third drawer there were also changes and the Kotablue Fibra Coruña 14/18 of Miguel Fernández from A Coruña took third position this Saturday with a fourth, a sixth and a third, also placing himself only one point behind the lead.

With these results, everything is open with three teams with options to take the title on Sunday in the final day.

Everything to be decided in the Gestilar Ladies Cup

For the Fígaros fleet that is playing the twenty-seventh edition of the Gestilar Ladies Cup, the second day of the Príncipe de Asturias closed with a dispute of two very tight tests and two teams sharing the victories of the day, leaving everything open for the last competition day.

Thus, if on Friday it was the crew of Tutatis de Marta Ramada (MRCYB) that was in the first drawer of the provisional podium, this Saturday it was Erizana de Pilar Casares, who competes under the banner of RCN Puerto de Pollensa the one who took the lead overall with a first and a fourth scored. Behind, second are now those of Ramada with a sixth and a first and third continue the sailors from Bouvento, who compete with Carmen Galdós in front representing the RCM of the Abra-Real Sporting Club.

In total, only three points separate the first three classified after the five races completed so far, so everything will depend on what happens on Sunday at the Baiona Bay regatta course.

Sunday, the last and decisive day of competition

With the first two days completed and after the celebration of the Terras Gauda National Sailing Awards gala on Saturday night, the Prince of Asturias Trophy will decide the winners of its thirty-eighth edition on Sunday with the dispute of the last tests in waters of the Vigo estuary.

With the departure scheduled at twelve o’clock in the morning both in the Cíes regatta course and in Baiona Bay for the Gestilar Ladies Cup, the leaders will leave ready to defend their positions to ensure the victory of the prestigious Galician event. The awards ceremony, which will take place at half past six in the afternoon in the Monte Real garden, will be in charge of putting the finishing touch.

The 38th Prince of Asturias Trophy is held under the organization of the Monte Real Club de Yates and the Naval Military School and thanks to the sponsorship of ABANCA, Terras Gauda and Gestilar. The competition also has the collaboration of the Xunta de Galicia, the Provincial Council of Pontevedra and the Baiona town hall; the Royal Spanish and Galician Sailing Federations; and the support of companies such as Solventis, Volvo Autesa, Aceites Abril, Zelnova Zeltia, Paradores, Vanguard Marine, Gadis, Foxy, SH Robotic, Onda Cero, Musto, the Solitium group, HOLA, Tuypan, Coca Cola and Martin Miller’s Gin.
