The Italian Alberto Dainese wins the sprint in Íscar

MADRID, 15 Sep. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Italian cyclist Alberto Dainese (Team DSM-Firmenich) has won the sprint in the nineteenth stage of the 78th edition of the Vuelta a España, held over 177.5 kilometers between La Bañeza and Íscar, while the American Sepp Kuss (Jumbo -Visma) maintains the overall lead.

The transalpine runner was the fastest in a tight sprint, marked by a fall two kilometers from the finish, in which the Australian Kaden Groves (Alpecin-Deceuninck) was affected and could not fight for his third victory in this edition of the Spanish round.

In the general classification, Kuss maintains a 17-second advantage over his teammate Jonas Vingegaard, and 1:08 over the third of the Jumbos, the Slovenian Primoz Roglic. The Spaniards Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) and Mikel Landa (Bahrain Victorious) close the ‘top 5’, at 4:00 and 4:19, respectively.

After two vibrant final high altitude stages, the peloton faced a completely flat day, where the sprinters were called to be the protagonists, but that did not prevent a four-runner breakaway from forming in the first kilometers.

The French Clément Davy (Groupama FDJ), Paul Lapeira (AG2R Citroen Team) and Mathis Le Berre (Arkea Samsic) and the Czech Michal Schlegel (Caja Rural) achieved an advantage that reached almost three minutes, over a main group in the one in which the Alpecin and the UAE set the pace.

The pace of the sprinter teams gradually closed the gap, until with 20 kilometers to go before reaching Íscar, the quartet’s adventure ended and hostilities began to be the best placed for the mass arrival.

Two kilometers before the finish, a Team DSM rider suffered a fall at the head of the peloton, which affected Groves, who had to step down and say goodbye to the fight for victory, opening the range of possibilities for victory.

In the final kilometers, Ineos Grenadiers worked to expand Filippo Ganna’s options, but the Italian was overtaken in the final meters by his compatriot Dainese, who started from behind to close his third victory in a grand tour.

This Saturday, the runners will face Stage 20 of La Vuelta between the towns of Manzanares El Real and Guadarrama, with a route of 207.8 kilometers. Penultimate day of the Spanish round with a multitude of hills and a cumulative difference in altitude that exceeds 4,200 meters. There is only one climb, the Collado del Portazgo, with an average slope of 3.4%.
