The fairy tale ends. The little guy hit hard against Fritz. Not even Veselý is progressing

On his 18th birthday, Jakub Menšík finished the US Open, losing to the favored American Taylor Fritz clearly 1:6, 2:6, 0:6. Not even Jiří Veselý was successful, who was not enough against the Croat Borna Goja with a score of 4:6, 3:6, 2:6.

Grand Slam debutant Menšík, who made it to the 3rd round of the US Open as the youngest player since 1990, was not surprised by Fritz’s tournament nine. The talented native of Prostějov, who qualified for the main competition, played only three games against the American favorite on Louis Armstrong’s court.

Seven years older Fritz surpassed the Czech player in the number of winning balls 25:6 and gave him the “canary” in the third set. The native of San Diego reached the round of 16 of the home US Open for the first time in his career.

“I have to say that I didn’t play my best tennis today. It was far from that. Everything was very fast for me. It was the first time I played on a big court in front of so many people. It was something completely different. I was experiencing completely new conditions and emotions. I didn’t know how to work with it yet,” said Menšík in an interview with Radiožurnál Sport.

“I think if it wasn’t new to me, he didn’t deal with things around him and he was able to concentrate, so I’m not saying I would have beaten him, but I would have been able to torment him more. it’s easy to play with these players,” added Menšík.

The 30-year-old Veselý, starting in the main competition thanks to a protected ranking, did not follow up on the previous triumphs over the French Enzo Couacaud and the Argentine Francisco Cerúndol. Against the 105th player in the world, Gojo, he did not manage a single break point, on the contrary, he lost his serve four times.

The native of Příbram lost the match in more than two hours, and thus did not use the chance to fight his way to the first round of 16 at the US Open. On the contrary, Gojo is pushing his personal Grand Slam best further in New York.
