the Catalan genius who left everything for the obsession of accumulating gold medals

Figure Skating World Cup

Pau Garcia was the winner in the free mode of the World Figure Skating Championships that are being held in Ibagué (Colombia)

BarcelonaHe is 23 years old and this morning he won the third absolute gold medal of his career. He did it in the men’s free mode of the World Figure Skating Championships that are being held in Ibagué (Colombia). Pau Garcia’s successes are by no means a coincidence. Born in Parets del Vallès, he started skating at the age of 7, at 14 he was already competing with the Spanish national team and at 16 he left for Reus with his coach Òscar Molins to dedicate himself exclusively to this sport. He went on a diet and began to dedicate every day of his life to reaching the level to be the best in the world. And when at the age of 17 he became the junior world champion in figure skating, the first thing he said was: “My goal is to be the absolute world champion.”

Said and done. In 2021 he won the first gold medal at the World Cup in Asuncion (Paraguay), in 2022 the second at the World Cup in Buenos Aires (Argentina) and now he has just won the third at the World Cup in Ibagué. “I know that elite sport is not compatible with what is meant by a normal life, because normal people don’t win medals at the World Championships. I hope that doesn’t sound pretentious, but it’s the truth.” said Pau Garcia last year in an interview with The country after winning his second absolute gold.

Emulating the path opened by Javier Fernández

This story began when, as a child, he went to watch the basketball training of one of his sisters at the Parets del Vallès pavilion. Garcia’s interest was focused on the figure skating training that took place at the rink next door, and soon after his parents, aware that he would not follow in his sister’s footsteps, signed him up for Club Patí Parets. He later signed for Club Patí Reus and now competes with the Artistic Skating Cunit.

Thanks to its successes, state figure skating, not used to media coverage and medals, is getting more presence in the media. In a way, Pau Garcia, who also won the gold medal in 2022 at the World Games in Birmingham (United States), is emulating the path opened by Madrid’s Javier Fernández in ice skating. A roller skater’s career is short. The expiration date for competing at the highest level is usually around 25 years old. But Garcia has already won everything there is to win and now he only has the challenge of continuing to magnify his legend.

Two Catalan silver medals

This morning, Catalan figure skating also won two silver medals at the World Cup in Ibagué. Kilian Gomis has hung it in the free mode by finishing second, behind Pau Garcia, thus achieving a historic Catalan double. On the other hand, Carla Escrich won silver in the women’s category, only surpassed by the Italian Rebecca Tarlazzi.
