The Career of Sebastian Rudy: Reflecting on Missed Opportunities

The man could have achieved more…

Sebastian Rudy (33) is one of those players where you often have the reflex to think that he has played below his value in his career.

In fact, Rudy has done more than you think: he became German champion once, he won the Supercup twice with Bayern Munich and – some remember – he was right in the middle when Germany won the Confed Cup in 2017.

After all, it’s been six years…

Now Rudy announces the end of his career. Even though he’s only 33 years old and could probably hang on for a while, even if it’s in the desert. Just like Julian Draxler is doing right now – with whom Rudy won the Confed Cup.

Rudy has other plans: “I still enjoy football, I won’t give it up. I’m doing a bit of searching and watching one or two district league games.”

Sounds as if he himself wants to play in the lower men’s division in the future.

Rudy (358 Bundesliga games, 17 goals) announces his end as a professional on the website of his former club TSG Hoffenheim. The defensive all-rounder played there from 2010 to 2017 and from 2019, initially on loan from Schalke. Rudy did not receive a new contract in the summer and has been without a club since then.

Surprising to many, Bayern brought in Rudy in 2017. His teammates there: top stars like Franck Ribery, Robert Lewandowski and David Alaba. He wasn’t really able to assert himself in 35 competitive games for Munich.

Nevertheless, during this time Rudy collected the titles of his career and played in the Champions League and in the meantime established himself in the national team.

At the completely messed up 2018 World Cup in Russia, Rudy was unlucky when he had to leave the field injured after just 31 minutes in his only appearance in the second group game against Sweden (2-1).

Rudy went to Schalke in the summer of 2018, but there he did not continue his top form, which had made him a national player since 2014 (29 appearances).

By the way, Rudy began his Bundesliga career in the youth ranks of VfB Stuttgart, where he also played his first 13 Bundesliga games.

What’s next for you professionally? Rudy: “I’m someone who might also want to start a second career. I don’t know how much time I need or what I’ll do in the end. I still have to think a little bit about what I enjoy and what excites me.”

Sounds like Rudy is turning his back on football in the future. You can be excited.
