Team World Dominates with Two Victories: Laver Cup Update

VANCOUVER – Team World continued its superb run Saturday at the Laver Cup, with two singles victories in three matches to take an 8-2 lead against Team Europe.

American Taylor Fritz first beat Russian Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6 (3) to give his team a fifth straight victory since Friday.

Fritz and Rublev exchanged aces, they who were able to count on their quality service.

Fritz dominated the game when he went to the net, winning 14 of his 77 points earned in the match that way.

Later in the day, Casper Ruud gave the European team the first points with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Tommy Paul.

But Europe’s moments of rejoicing were short, as the American Frances Tiafoe was uncompromising against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz, winning 7-5, 6-3.

Each match won on Friday gave one point, while the matches on Saturday gave two points. The first team to 13 points wins the title.

At the end of the evening at Rogers Arena, Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime and American Ben Shelton will pair up for a doubles match against the same Hurkacz, as well as Frenchman Gaël Monfils.

Last year, in London, the World Team won the tournament for the first time. Team Europe had won the previous four performances (the 2020 show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).
