Tatjana Maria Makes Strong Quarter-Final Exit in Guangzhou as WTA Tour Returns to China

Tatjana Maria was the last German tennis player to be eliminated in the quarter-finals in Guangzhou. In the comeback of the WTA tour in China, the 36-year-old from Bad Saulgau lost to Kazakh Yulia Putinzewa 4:6, 7:6 (8:6), 0:6. Maria had previously remained in two duels without losing a set.

Maria led the second set 3-0 and 5-2, but only won it in the tiebreak. There was nothing left to be gained in the decisive third round. The German, seeded third, was the only German player to reach the round of 16 in Guangzhou. Jule Niemeier (Dortmund), Tamara Korpatsch (Hamburg) and Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied) all failed in the first round.

The WTA withdrew from China in protest against the treatment of former tennis player Peng Shuai, who largely disappeared from the public after allegations of abuse against a high-ranking politician in November 2021. The players’ organization lifted its ban in April and Guangzhou is the first stop.
