Tamara Korpatsch Falls Short in WTA Tour Comeback in China

After Jule Niemeier (Dortmund), Tamara Korpatsch also failed at the start of her comeback of the WTA tour in China.

The Hamburger lost to local hero Yuan Yue in Guangzhou 3:6, 6:7 (5:7). On Tuesday, two other German tennis professionals, Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau/No. 3) and Anna-Lena Friedsam (Neuwied), will fight for a place in the round of 16 in the $259,303 tournament.

Niemeier lost in Guangzhou on Monday against Briton Harriet Dart (3:6, 2:6). The first of seven WTA tournaments will take place in China this year.

The WTA withdrew from the country in protest against the treatment of former tennis player Peng Shuai, who disappeared from the public for several weeks after allegations of abuse against a high-ranking politician. In April, the players’ organization lifted their ban.

Things continue in China next week in Ningbo, followed by one of the biggest tournaments this fall in Beijing.
