Suspended sentences after attack on boy in French stadium

Three men in France have been given one-year suspended sentences for attacking a boy and his father in a stadium. The three 20-year-olds also received fines and a three-year stadium ban, according to the public prosecutor’s office in Ajaccio, Corsica, on Friday.

The case caused horror in France. Kenzo, who is suffering from a brain tumor, and his parents all wore Marseille jerseys in the game between AC Ajaccio and Olympique Marseille at the beginning of June. According to them, Kenzo, then eight years old, and his father were attacked by Corsica fans in the island’s capital stadium.

After the case became known, French President Emmanuel Macron also called for clear and tough sanctions for the attackers. Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra spoke of unacceptable violence that must be punished.

The Corsican club said some time after the incident that it appeared that the information initially disseminated about the case was only partially true. Video surveillance shows that the seriousness of some fans’ actions has been greatly exaggerated.
