Standard Secures First Victory of the Season Against Eupen: A Recap of the Match

The international break and the final offensive on the transfer market have done Standard good. Standard scored its first three-pointer of the season against Eupen: 1-3. It only makes a small jump in the standings, but the first victory will probably restore some peace.

Eupen – Standard in a nutshell:

Key moment: Standard scored twice shortly before half-time, but was unable to catch the ball shortly after half-time. Charles-Cook immediately gets a huge chance to score the tying goal, but Bodart keeps Standard afloat. Man of the match: Club Brugge mercenary Kamal Sowah was immediately given a starting place by Carl Hoefkens and grabbed the opportunity with both hands. The newcomer weighed on the Eupense defense, created chances and immediately scored in his first match for Standard. Striking: For William Balikwisha it will be a match to quickly forget. After a dramatic raid of just 10 minutes, in which he was the basis for the 1-3, he was unceremoniously taken back to the side by Carl Hoefkens. Statistics: For Standard it is not only the first league victory this season, it is the first victory since April 14. Then it won at home against Charleroi. This was followed by 13 league matches without a win.

Double blow for Eupen just before half time

Carl Hoefkens asked for and received reinforcements from Standard after the meager 3 out of 18. No surprise then that newcomers Djenepo Moussa, Isaac Hayden and Kamal Sowah were immediately given a starting place. In total, Hoefkens even made more than six substitutions.

The renewed Standard showed more eagerness, but the offensive lack of maturity did not appear to have been resolved. Only after more than half an hour did Djenepo bring some momentum with a wonderful dribble past three players, but the newcomer was unable to finish from close range.

A poor first half headed for a logical 0-0, but the devil was in the tail. Davidson misjudged a deep pass and Kanga took full advantage. The striker defeated Slonina with a crossed shot.

At Eupen they were so upset that Paeshuyse just handed the ball to Kawabe at the back a minute later. The Japanese gratefully accepted the gift and cleverly aimed the ball into the far corner: 0-2.

Bodart and Sowah secure the Liège victory

The sudden double lead caused Standard to be somewhat lax at the start of the second half. After a careless loss of ball from Liège, Charles-Cook suddenly came face to face with Arnaud Bodart. Fortunately for the visitors, he was alert and prevented the tying goal.

Standard gradually took control again and twenty minutes before the end Kanga came close to 0-3. Slonina put a stop to it. Five minutes later the visitors did score. On Canak’s instructions, Club Brugge mercenary Sowah scored his first goal for Standard.

Match played, or so it seemed. But Standard got themselves into trouble in the final phase. After the dramatic substitute Balikwisha lost the ball, Finnbogason made it 1-3. In extra time, Paeshuyse even scored the tying goal, but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Standard got away well, but it ended on a down note when Alzate picked up a second yellow card for an ostentatious dive into the box. The victory was no longer in jeopardy, after more than 104 (!) minutes the first three-pointer of the season was scored for Standard.

Hoefkens: “Everyone was longing for this victory”

Florian Kohfeldt (trainer Eupen): “We made two individual mistakes and Standard scored two goals from them. We gave the game away in those two minutes. The first half was very boring, we played very poorly. In the second half we did well. responded with 5 to 6 clear chances. I am very satisfied with our second half, but this was a dramatic afternoon for us. We saw two players with Lambert and Magnée fall injured, that does not look good. If we score 2-3 We would have still had a chance. I’m sure of that. We really put Standard under pressure at the end.” Carl Hoefkens (Standard coach): “We played a very good first half and the first 20 minutes of the second half were also more than okay. With a lot of movement and good pressing, that’s how we scored those two goals. It’s a derby and then you know that it can be difficult if you concede a goal. Then you have to make the necessary substitutions and in general I am very satisfied with the substitutes. For Balikwisha (who brought Hoefkens back to the side shortly after coming on as a substitute, save .) it was a very clear message. I want 100 percent effort and that was not the case. The newcomers immediately brought a surplus, I am very satisfied with that. This is an incredibly important victory, which everyone was longing for.” clock 90+15′ second halfsecond half, minute 105 match oversecond half, minute 104. End.
