Stan Wawrinka was not happy in Manchester on Tuesday

Stan Wawrinka’s last Davis Cup experience before this Tuesday in Manchester took place in Trier in February 2023: the hall was full, Wawrinka was able to secure Switzerland’s place in the second round in the decisive singles match against Daniel Altmaier. The mood of the 2014 champion was at a high back then.

That probably changed during the game against Ugo Humbert, which Wawrinka lost just as easily as the doubles match alongside Marc-Andrea Huesler. 0:3 against France, with Dominic Stricker winning the only set against Adrian Mannarino. Bad enough. But even worse: the matches took place almost behind closed doors. Which Stan Wawrinka then denounced in a tweet addressed to the ITF and the former Davis Cup marketer Gerard Piqué.

Piqué’s answer didn’t take long to arrive. The Spanish soccer world champion, whose Kosmos group no longer organizes the Davis Cup this year, pointed out that last year’s intermediate round in Bologna, Valencia, Hamburg and Glasgow was attended by more than 100,000 fans. And so it was a complete success.

Wawrinka didn’t let this go unnoticed. And come to the question: If it had been such a success – why did the original 25-year contract only become one for five years?

After all: this Wednesday, the home team from Great Britain will intervene. The hall should be reasonably full.
