According to tennis star Stan Wawrinka, the organizers of the Davis Cup are said to have bought the spectators and created artificial noise.
The 38-year-old Wawrinka is sure. During Switzerland’s group stage games against France, Australia and Great Britain, he repeatedly pointed out the empty seats and the lack of atmosphere from the fans. The Swiss accuses the International Tennis Federation (ITF) of artificially increasing the volume in the AO Arena in Manchester in order to create a good atmosphere.

The two-time Grand Slam winner doesn’t like the new format of the Davis Cup. Since 2019, the country duels between the best 16 nations have no longer been held in the country of the home team, but rather in a major tournament at a selected location. This means that fewer visitors and fans come into the arenas.
These changes were made by the Kosmos investment group headed by former soccer star Gerard Pique shortly after joining in 2018.
In January of this year, however, the International Tennis Federation ended the contract, which ran until 2053, after less than five years. “We believe that what we did with the Davis Cup was a resounding success,” Piqué said, according to Marca.

Wawrinka tagged the Spaniard on “X” and posted a video of the empty stands in the hall in Manchester. Underneath it read: “Thank you Gerard Piqué and ITFTennis! Davis Cup: France vs. Switzerland lol.”
The ex-Barcelona star countered and commented on Wawrinka’s post. “Those were the viewer numbers last year. You can compare it yourself. We are no longer organizing the event. Ask ITFTennis,” replied Pique. The number 113,268 can be read in one picture. Last year’s group stage viewership.
