Sports Open Day at Vanterpool Stadium Highlights Sporting Diversity

Swimming, tennis, badminton and even boxing, 39 stands were present at the Vanterpool stadium on Saturday morning. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., families could find out about the different sports and associations.

Highlight sporting diversity

This is the case of Ginette, accompanied by her son. “He plays a lot of sport,” she explains. “He played football, basketball and boxing but he really likes discovering new activities. There, we go to the golf stand because he would like to have information.

Faced with families, the associations are often in full force in order to attract visitors and obtain new registrations. “We have already had registrations,” assures François Thao, vice-president of SXM Badminton club. “It’s important for us to be there because we can present what we do and answer different questions. We are present almost every school year.”

If classic disciplines such as football or basketball were present, others made their first appearance for this sporting season. This is the case of netball, the objective of which is to score goals by throwing the ball through a ring mounted on a 3 meter high post. The team that scores the most goals at the end of the game wins.

“Netball, which is similar to basketball, is still little known in France,” says Claudine Joseph, member of the French netball association. “We had a lot of curious people. Some thought it was basketball or even volleyball. We informed them. We are very happy to participate in the event and to introduce our club.”

Each year, the event is organized by the Community through its human development delegation and its sports department. “This event is important at the start of every year,” says event organizer Wendy Gumbs. “The aim of this day is above all to present the different sports to the public, it is the time of the return to sport for many clubs. We do this every year and it’s always as successful,” she adds. Around 300 people visited Vanterpool Stadium in search of its future activity.
