Spezia’s Fragile Defeat against Venezia: A Wake-Up Call to Reverse the Trend

Timid signs of awakening are not enough for a too staid Spezia to emerge unscathed from the Island of Sant’Elena, beaten by a sly Venezia, for whom a missile from Pohjanpalo is enough to sink the fragile eagle vessel. Given the shortage of central defenders, Alvini returns to 4-3-3, does not risk Gelashvili and launches Bertola, who manages quite well until he is forced to pay the price for the category’s desuetude on extremely sandy and leg-cutting ground: it will be the detail that will cost the match. Up front we see an elastic trident, with Verde and Antonucci free to vary and Moro too alone, who never makes an impact. Green, although still far from his best condition, even in Corricchiando has such superior class that the team can only benefit from it. The first ring comes with the shots of Moro and Verde blocked (8′), but Venezia responds with a couple of nice actions in a minute. Tessmann is opposed by Dragowski (11′), Pohjanpalo’s attack is more dangerous, as he beats Nikolaou with a dribble but sees the shot blocked by Amian (12′). The home team had a great opportunity in the 22nd minute, when a beautiful move set up by Tessmann and finished off by a cross from Zampano was wasted by Johnsen alone in the center of the area. At this point the pace drops and the game ends up bogging down. Spezia shows up in the 26th minute with Bandinelli and Joronen a little uncertain, but the opportunity to pass arrives in the 41st minute, with the former Empoli player severely challenging the goalkeeper, but the onrushing Amian devours the goal from two steps by downloading outside the network. At the end of the half Dragowski surpasses Zampano, the Finnish striker arrives on the rebound and scores.

Dress rehearsal of the goal, frustrated by the VAR, which detects the full-back’s offside. At the start of the second half (51′) the other great opportunity for La Spezia, with two torpedoes from Verde, one from the left and one from the right, returned within a few seconds and Antonucci who sees his header saved on the line few steps. Venezia gets back ahead and Bertola makes a great save from Sverko’s cross, deflecting it for a corner, getting injured on the occasion. Alvini doesn’t replace him and so, from the corner returned centrally, first Busio hits the post with the goalkeeper beaten, then Pohajnpalo scores under the crossbar. Bertola goes out with the oxen running, Elia goes on the wing, Amian central. We expected a reaction that didn’t arrive: in the 64th minute Johnsen wasted the matchpoint from close range. Alvini puts on Kouda and a still impalpable Zurkowski, but nothing changes. To see a shot you need a free kick given by the Venetians: in the 77th minute Verde attempts the supergoal, Joronen simply raises it over the crossbar, his teammates don’t appreciate the initiative. Then comes the classic kick to the shins of the lame man, when in the 83rd minute a defender commits a clear penalty from the hand, but a moment before Francesco Esposito overwhelmed a defender in Bud Spencer style, nullifying the help of fate. Ultimately, this is right: this team lacks too many things: legs, changes at the right level, wickedness: if in the 95th minute we start building from the bottom instead of throwing desperately, causing the referee to blow the whistle, or if the cards are pouring in on the bench instead of on the pitch, it is clear that we need to reverse the trend quickly.
