Sonny Colbrelli understands all too well what Nathan Van Hooydonck is experiencing now.
The Italian collapsed in March last year after a stage in the Tour of Catalonia.
Colbrelli, European champion at the time, was resuscitated, but would never return to competition.
A defibrillator was also fitted to the Italian. The news about Van Hooydonck made him turn to his digital pen.
“I understand what is going through your head right now,” he addressed our compatriot on Facebook. “I recognize your pain and your only question: why does this have to happen to me?”
“I know what you feel in your hospital bed when people tell you your career is over, but you don’t want to believe it yourself.”
“But in those moments you have to be strong and think that we are still alive, while many cannot say that.”
“Know that you are not alone and that you will never be alone. I wish you the best in your future life, Nathan.”
