Siegemund, who also triumphed in the mixed doubles at Flushing Meadows in 2016, is now aiming for her third major title.

Zvonareva, who turns 39 on Thursday, already has six triumphs – she won the mixed doubles at the US Open 19 years ago.

Siegemund plays with strong nerves

In the semifinals, Siegemund and Zvonareva presented themselves at their best. While a storm was brewing at the Flushing Meadows facility, the spectators under the roof of the Louis Armstrong Stadium saw a hard-fought first set after a good start from the German and her partner.

As their opponents got better and better into the game over time, Siegemund and Zvonareva had to tremble at the end of the round, but fended off several break points.
