During the last few weeks, it has become known about several cases where Latvian young athletes have taken and further distributed videos with pornographic content. While it comes as an unpleasant surprise to coaches and leaders of sports life, experts admit that the problem is not new, and it is good that the public is finally starting to talk about it.
One such case, which broke out of a narrow circle of experts and became public, was already at the end of last year in floorball, but another, recent, loudest precedent is connected with the sexual “feats” of the boys of the Latvian U-15 basketball team, which, right there in the dressing room, were filmed during the Baltic Sea Cup. in the competition in Tallinn, became popular in the wider society. Unfortunately, they are far from the only ones, and information about various episodes is both at the disposal of the police and at the disposal of MVP from other involved parties – parents, heads of sports schools. This proves that the topic is not only topical and painful for many, but dangerous if society ignores it. Signs show that the spread of child pornography is an unprecedented test for the Latvian sports community.
In order to discuss the scope, reasons and possible solutions of what is happening, we invited basketball coach Ziedon Janson, sports psychologist Pēteris Egli, chairman of the board of “Papardes zieds” association Iveta Kelli and director of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Education and Culture Vladimir Šteinberg in the MVP studio in the first broadcast of this season. In the era of social networks, are adults able to compete with teenagers and even children in terms of knowledge and understanding, and what to do in situations when young people cross the boundaries of what is acceptable and even legal – we discussed these and many other questions in this conversation.
