Seven New Members Inducted into Sherbrooke Sports Pantheon

Seven new members made their official entry into the Sherbrooke Sports Pantheon on Wednesday evening. Dozens of people gathered at the Granada Theater for the occasion.

These new members will have a plaque installed at Jacques-Cartier Park in Sherbrooke with their name inscribed along with a short description of their exploits and a photo. Passers-by will soon be able to observe more than 80 plaques in this open-air museum.

Basketball referee Paul Deshaies is part of the group this year. This Sherbrooke resident has more than 40 years of involvement behind the tie and has participated in important events across the country and abroad.

This ceremony allows him to recall precious memories. Of course there are memories of the competitions and the teams we saw, but what remains more are the people we met who were doing the same job, who were there as officials of different country, he says with affection.

It’s moving and it’s gratifying because it’s decided by people in the sporting world, who know a little about what it’s about, so it’s a great recognition. It’s a nice wink.

For the president of the Panthéon des sports de Sherbrooke, Jean Perreault, this is an important asset for the community. With my grandson, I said to him: “Do you know Sylvie Daigle, an Olympic champion?” He was six years old, he told me: “No, I don’t know her,” he remembers. So we have a duty in sport to help athletes, to make them produce at the national and international level, but we have a duty to remember them.
