Serhou Guirassy’s Goal-Scoring Exploits Shine in the Bundesliga

The man is – of course – on everyone’s lips: Serhou Guirassy scores at will and the 27-year-old has already scored ten goals in the still young Bundesliga season. The madness in numbers.

The man of the hour: Serhou Guirassy. IMAGO/Sportfoto Pack

A cracker from the edge of the penalty area and a lob to make it 3-1 for VfB Stuttgart against Darmstadt 98 mark Guirassy’s ninth and tenth goals in the fifth league game. With that double pack, the national player draws level with Robert Lewandowski. The Pole achieved the same feat for FC Bayern in 2020/21. It was the season when Lewandowski, who is now scoring goals for FC Barcelona, broke Gerd Müller’s supposedly eternal record (40 goals in 1971/72) with 41 goals.

Can Guirassy also target this brand? Despite all the class, it seems unrealistic, but of course the teammate factor also plays a role and it is obvious that in a top team like that of Munich it is usually more possible to maintain such incredible rates over the long term. The fact is: Guirassy already has his sights set on the two top scorers from last season, Niclas Füllkrug and Christopher Nkunku (16 each).

A goal rarely comes alone

Especially since the Frenchman, who was born in Arles, is obviously capable of actually using a run. When he scores, it tends to go wrong at the moment: Guirassy scored his fourth multiple against the Lilies (one hat-trick, three doubles). No professional in the Bundesliga has ever achieved this so early in a season. Accordingly, the hymns of praise are pouring out over the 1.87 meter man, represented by the eulogy from sports director Fabian Wohlgemuth: “What Serhou is currently doing is unbelievable. Nevertheless, he doesn’t lose his grip on the ground and is a role model for team service and prepares goals himself. ”

In addition to his ten goals, there has been an assist since the weekend, as ex-Cologne player Enzo Millot served exemplary. Guirassy can therefore be mentioned in the same breath as another world star: Erling Haaland. Only the Norwegian has collected at least eleven scorer points after five matchdays since assists began being recorded in 1988/89 (eleven in the 2021/22 season). Haaland and Guirassy are only surpassed by Robert Lewandowski with 15 scorer points in 2020/21 (10 goals, 5 assists).

So it’s no wonder that VfB started the season so well with twelve points. The Swabians have only collected at least that many points since the introduction of the three-point rule in 1996/97, back then there were 15. And they had only achieved the current 17 goals scored at such an early point in time, in 1984/85.
