“The team felt let down by Hansi Flick”

After Flick’s expulsion and the subsequent 2-1 win against France, the question remains as to who will be the new national coach. It could be someone from abroad, “someone with knowledge of German,” says former national player Dietmar Hamann in an interview with WELT.

After the dismissal of Hans-Dieter Flickt, the DFB is looking for a new national coach. There are several candidates, including Julian Nagelsmann, who is out of contract. Ballack, Hamann and Co. would prefer a different coach.

The German Football Association (DFB) doesn’t have much time left. In mid-October the national team will play in the USA against Mexico and the United States. There are only nine months left until the home European Championship. After the dismissal of Hansi Flick, the national team is still without a coach. The hottest candidates to succeed the 58-year-old are Julian Nagelsmann, Louis van Gaal and Stefan Kuntz.

The Dutchman van Gaal has the best cards among many veterans. Michael Ballack stood up for the 72-year-old. “You should focus on the best. I would take an experienced man and van Gaal is an exceptional coach. “He’s definitely not an easy guy, but that’s not a bad thing,” Ballack told “Kicker”.

He believes the national team needs a different approach than in the years under Joachim Löw and Hansi Flick. “Van Gaal covers almost everything that is needed. He is a person of respect, has experienced everything and knows the entire spectrum of being a coach,” said Ballack. The fact that van Gaal has a Dutch passport “is something we still have to get used to”.

Van Gaal had already been brought into the game by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm after his dismissal a week ago. The former Bayern coach most recently worked as a bond coach and was eliminated from the World Cup in Qatar in the quarter-finals against eventual world champions Argentina.

“Actually a job for a more sedate or older trainer”

Ballack has his sights set primarily on the European Championships next year. When looking for a new national coach, you don’t necessarily need a long-term solution. “In general, it is complicated to plan long-term in the national team these days because it would be very much dependent on a coach and his orientation. I think that the perspective has to be subordinated at the moment because success is above everything,” said Ballack. In a national team, like in a club, it’s “about momentum”.

Stefan Effenberg also spoke out against Nagelsmann as Flick’s successor. “I’m not a fan of that, just because of my age,” said the former national player in the “double pass”. “I believe that the national players need someone who has a certain amount of experience, who has played everything himself. Who looks at the players from above.”

Effenberg advises people to at least think about Louis van Gaal: “The national coach should be a good coach. He has to have that personality and age so that the guys sitting there, who are highly decorated and trained, look up to you. I think that’s the key point.”

Dietmar Hamann is also campaigning for a seasoned and experienced coach. Nagelsmanns was head coach in the Bundesliga for seven years. “But the national team job is different. “It’s actually a job for a slightly more sedate or older coach because – in quotation marks – it’s a part-time job,” said the 50-year-old on Sky.
