School teams from Speyer successful at the national finals

Berlin/Speyer. From September 17th to 21st, the national final of the renowned school sports competition “Youth training for the Olympics” took place in the metropolis of Berlin. Supported by the Sparkasse Vorderpfalz, the school teams from the Kaiserdom Speyer high school (hockey boys and judo girls) and the Nikolaus-von-Weis-Gymnasium Speyer (rowing boys) started with a new outfit.

Volker Mindl, head of the Speyer headquarters of Sparkasse Vorderpfalz, was enthusiastic about the motivation and commitment of the young athletes right from the start. The Sparkasse Vorderpfalz equipped the participants with uniform sports jackets in advance and kept their fingers crossed for the competitions in Berlin.

The results of the school teams in Berlin are impressive: In the sport of judo, the girls from the high school at the Kaiserdom Speyer achieved a respectable 6th place and impressively demonstrated their skills. In the hockey competition, the boys from the high school at Kaiserdom Speyer achieved an impressive 9th place and demonstrated team spirit and commitment. The performance of the rowing team from the Nikolaus-von-Weis-Gymnasium Speyer was particularly pleasing, as they climbed to the winner’s podium and took a deserved third place.

“Youth trains for the Olympics” is a school sports competition that is important throughout Germany and, with around 800,000 participants, is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Since its founding in 1969, the competition has produced numerous top athletes, including greats such as Franziska van Almsick, Boris Becker and Michael Groß. The savings banks in Rhineland-Palatinate are the main sponsors of the state competition of “Youth train for the Olympics”. In Rhineland-Palatinate, more than 28,000 students take part in the competition every year.
