When Pierre Hérouin, a resident of Sablé-sur-Sarthe, found a message in the mailbox of the Sablé Sport Santé association (SASSA) to propose the name of a person within the framework of the My Generation project, he didn’t feel like “proposing someone.” »

He still circulated the information. And it was he, the founder and president, who was approached.

President of the Departmental Adapted Sports Committee

It must be said that after having held the presidency of the departmental committee for adapted sport, the retired educator is currently a member of the Regional Olympic and Sports Committee to promote sport for all.

I couldn’t see myself going there alone. I wanted all SASSA administrators to be highlighted.

So it was Agnès, his wife and secretary of the association, who accompanied him. Because among the Hérouins, family life and associative commitment are one.

A champion of France

“It all started at the end of the 1970s at the CAT (Editor’s note Center for help through work) which was at the time in Asnières-sur-Vègre, says Pierre. During the lunch break, educators and disabled workers started playing football to fill the time. »

One thing leading to another, a group was born, then an association in 1992 recognized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports the following year and an everyday investment since then.

Regional level in adapted sport

This adventure in collective sport lasted until the mid-2000s. The team played on the Juigné-sur-Sarthe field and had reached a regional level in adapted sport.

In the meantime, the association, supported by the APEI, the association of parents of maladjusted children from Sablé-Solesmes, had launched competitive cross-country.

We had a guy champion of France. When he came to us he was in very poor health. I saw his potential and a strength of character, so we pushed him and it worked. It was further proof that sport can bring physical and psychological well-being.

The association is structured

A step was taken when the State made it possible to hire sports professionals to support people with disabilities and others in sport-health. The association has structured itself and developed a wider offer, to the point of attracting a growing number of able-bodied members.

A new commitment

Agnès, nurse by profession, deputy mayor of Précigné and volunteer firefighter, remembers this shift:

I got my first job at the Foyer de vie. Women were offered physical activities to empower themselves. It worked. They started to gain self-confidence and go out on the town.

Implementation of healthy sport

Then there were the links with sports clubs to open up practice to the disabled: handball, judo, archery.

Today, SASSA has taken another turn.

The association has become an important player in setting up “sport-health in the Sabolian Country” in partnership with the city and the medical world.

“The goal is to organize adapted physical activity courses for people who receive a prescription from their doctor,” says Agnès. We want to allow everyone to have access to sport, including those who are furthest from it in their daily lives. »
