Rubiales: “In the name of Feminism, you should not try to sink a man – or a woman – without a fair trial”

Luis Rubiales has stated this Friday in a statement that “in the name of Feminism we have not of trying to sink a man -not a woman- without a fair trial”. The suspended president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) thus maintains the position that following the kiss he made to the player Jenni Hermoso has suffered “an unprecedented political and media lynching”, and considers that the matter “has been magnified and taken out of context for other reasons”. Rubiales has been “especially” concerned about the pressure against him exerted by “some of those who must proclaim and contribute to guaranteeing the separation of powers”, instead of letting justice “act with all the guarantees”.

Rubiales’ statement was made public after the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAE) filed a disciplinary case against him for the events that occurred during the celebration of the women’s world cup in Australia. Some events that the TAE considers serious, not very serious, a nuance that prevents the Superior Council of Sports, which it depends on the state governmentto suspend Rubiales as was his wish.

Shortly after learning of the TAE’s decision, the Minister of Culture and Sports, Miquel Iceta, announced in a press conference that the Superior Sports Council (CSE) will urge the Court to provisionally suspend Rubiales until he resolves his case file.

In this context, the press release of the president of the RFEF has appeared suspended for 90 days by FIFA, in which he admits that he made “obvious” mistakes that he says he “sincerely” regrets, but where he maintains the thesis that the kiss to Hermoso was “consented”, and where he defends that “at no time was there no aggression”. It should be remembered, in this sense, that the Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation to determine whether or not there was one.

In the text, Rubiales regrets the “unprecedented political and media lynching” he has suffered, but says he has heard the “growing support of people on the street and on social networks”. “I feel that something has changed and in the face of such a spurious public injustice and judgment, ordinary citizens, women and men alike, have united,” says the sports leader. “The popular support reinforces the idea that this matter has been magnified and taken out of context for other reasons,” he concludes.
