Rocha will lead the Federation until the elections in 2024

Pedro Rocha will take the reins of the Spanish Football Federation (FEF) until the call for elections, scheduled for the first quarter of 2024. The extraordinary assembly of the sports organization – which was constituted as a managing commission – held this Friday did not take a position unanimously in favor of Rocha continuing to take the reins, but there was a sufficient majority for it to be so.

The managing commission will now ask the Higher Sports Council (CSD) to authorize the advancement of the elections to the first months of next year. This request will receive the approval of the CSD, which wants to close the ‘Rubiales case’ as soon as possible and focus on the objective that it believes should unite the entire world of sport: the achievement of the 2030 World Cup.

Any person may present themselves in these next elections, with the only requirements of being of legal age and having Spanish nationality, without incurring any cause of incapacity or ineligibility. Be presented by a minimum of 15% of the members of the general assembly. That is, 21 members. Each of them can present more than one candidate but can only vote for one.

In that electoral race, according to the newspaper Marca, would be Mateo Alemany, Rami Aboukhair, Emilio Garcia Silvero, Iker Casillas … The territorial presidents could seek a consensus candidate and the main aspirants, according to the same medium, would be Pablo Lozano, Salvador Gomar and Paco Ten.

This Friday’s meeting did not address any other current issue nor the one that keeps the Federation in suspense: the decision of the world champion soccer players not to respond to the national team’s call until the organization addresses a profound restructuring. Some of those attending the aforementioned assembly privately expressed their discomfort because, according to the newspaper As, they understand that no more time should be wasted and they propose to begin preparing the reforms demanded by the players to end the conflict once and for all.
