Red Sox Fire Chaim Bloom as Team Faces Another Disappointing Season

Boston. Boston Red Sox management has fired Chaim Bloom, its director of baseball operations, with the team on track to finish at the bottom of its division for the third time in the past four seasons.

Boston made the announcement before the start of a doubleheader against the New York Yankees, who took the first two games of the series to remain tied with the Red Sox in the basement of the American League East Division.

Bloom came to Boston from the Tampa Bay Rays in order to revive the minor league system and put the finances of one of the highest payroll teams in Major League Baseball (MLB) in order. One of his first measures was the transfer of Mookie Betts — the American League Most Valuable Player in 2018 — by order of the owners to reduce spending.

The team reported that general manager Brian O’Halloran “received the proposal to assume a new management position within the baseball operations department.”

O’Halloran will lead the department on an interim basis, alongside assistant managers Eddie Romero, Raquel Ferreira and Michael Groopman.

After 86 years without winning the World Series championship, the Red Sox have won four since 2004, the most this century.

But they have done it with three different bosses: Theo Epstein (2004 and 2007), Ben Cherington (2013) and Dave Dombrowski (2018). They are seeking to avoid the instability that has also seen them finish last in their division five times since 2012.
