Questions raised as Anderlecht extends coach Brian Riemer’s contract until 2026

He would have had interest from England, but Brian Riemer extended his contract with Anderlecht until 2026. Football analyst Peter Vandenbempt questions this in Extra Time. “Riemer has not achieved any achievements in recent months that other clubs may have noticed,” he says.

Anyone who compares Anderlecht on the 1st match day with the team that took on Club Brugge on the 8th match day will see a completely different team standing between the lines.

However, the level of purple and white has not yet undergone the same revolution. However, coach Brian Riemer’s expiring contract was extended until 2026.

“Isn’t that to bring peace to the tent and to avoid hassle and questions being asked every week?”, says analyst Peter Vandenbempt in Extra Time.

“I cannot imagine that Anderlecht has entered into a contract that will cost them a lot of money if Riemer is dismissed. That would not be a good policy.”

Riemer’s management expressed interest from the Championship and Premier League clubs are also said to have been interested in the Dane to become an assistant.

Vandenbempt wonders about those “stories”. “Riemer has not achieved any achievements in recent months that other clubs may have noticed,” he says. “It’s hard for me to imagine that.”

Youri Mulder sees no problem in Anderlecht’s approach. “With an expiring contract you have to start talking at some point. If you are convinced that Riemer will remain a trainer, why would you wait?”

“But on what basis is Anderlecht convinced?” Vandenbempt asks. “Things are better than 6 or 7 years ago,” Mulder answers.

Vandenbempt: “It is a completely different team than 6 years ago. It is no longer the team that Vincent Kompany had to train.”

“Fredberg undermines Riemer’s authority”

The fact that CEO Jesper Fredberg and coach Brian Riemer form a very close tandem also raises questions in Extra Time.

“It’s a bit too much of a unity,” says Vandenbempt. “Fredberg himself states that he does not give instructions or direct substitutions, but the perception alone undermines the credibility and authority of the trainer.”

“Now there is a perception that it is Fredberg who determines too much what happens. And that may be wrong for Brian Riemer.”

Is the Dane not in his place at Anderlecht? “He is loved by the players,” said Vandenbempt. “And when he arrived, he was the ideal trainer. His positivism and optimism have breathed a breath of fresh air into the club and made everyone believe in themselves.”
