Qualifying for Tennis at the Paris Olympic Games 2024: Rules and Regulations

This is the way in which tennis players can qualify to compete in the Paris Olympic Games in 2024, which are held at Roland Garros.

The clay court of the French Tennis Federation will witness the celebration of the tennis modality in the next edition of the Olympic Games. This will be the seventh time that the Olympics have been held on clay, returning to this surface 32 years later. The qualification system for the tournament has few changes from the method used for the Tokyo Games. This is what the tennis players will have to do to qualify in each of the tournament modalities.

Tennis classification rules at the Olympic Games

General rules

Each country can qualify up to 12 players, six per gender, represented by a maximum of four players, the best classified within their country, in each of the singles draws. They will also have two entries in each of the doubles draws, and only one entry in mixed doubles. The ATP and WTA rankings from June 10, 2024 determine the majority of athletes who will qualify. One criterion to be selected is to play in the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup, although there may be exceptions.

Singles classification

The singles draws will include 64 players for each competition. The rankings determine 56 of them, and only four may be from the same country. France has one guaranteed place per event as host country, but will not use it if French players are already qualified. Another six places are ITF places, and another is a universal place. ITF places are awarded to winners or finalists of continental competitions in the Americas, Asia and Africa.

The other two ITF spots are reserved for Olympic or Grand Slam singles champions who have not qualified by other criteria, as long as they are among the top 400 in singles and do not push their country over its maximum quota.

Doubles classification

Each doubles event has 32 teams, a maximum of two per country. The first to qualify are the 10 best players in the ATP and WTA doubles rankings, as long as they have an available partner from the same nation within the top 300 of any ranking and the designation of the partner does not cause their maximum quota to be exceeded. The places are then distributed using the combined rankings of the peers. Finally, priority goes to teams that already have players qualified for a singles event.

Mixed doubles classification

Only athletes who are already qualified for singles or doubles can participate in one of the 16 mixed doubles teams, allowing one team per NOC. Ranking is decided by the combined ranking of the teammates.
