Qualifiers: Bielsa’s Uruguay beat Berizzo’s Chile | With goals from De la Cruz (2) and Valverde, an auspicious debut in the Centenario; Vidal discounted

With the official debut of Marcelo Bielsa from Rosario as coach, Uruguay beat Eduardo Berizzo’s Chile 3-1 this Friday at the Centenario stadium in Montevideo, for the first date of the South American Qualifiers.

Nicolás de la Cruz from River Plate (converted for two) and Federico Valverde scored for the Celeste; discounted the admitted Arturo Vidal.

The game started like a chess game between two coaches who know each other very well. The parity was broken after half an hour after a great play in speed in which De la Cruz let it pass and then received a first pass from Darwin Núñez to mark the opening with class.

The Chilean Marcelino Núñez arrived a couple of times with danger, but before the break Valverde increased the score with another great goal that unleashed euphoria in the emblematic Montevideo stadium.

In the complement, the Celeste was still superior and increased the score with another great goal from De la Cruz, after an assist from Darwin Núñez.

Immediately, the historic Vidal, after a header from Valdés that hit the crossbar, scored for Chile, who seemed to wake up.

But the truth was that Uruguay was always closer to increasing the result than the visit was to narrowing differences.

Promising debut of “Loco” Bielsa in the Celeste, which next Tuesday will visit Ecuador, while Chile will seek to recover as host of Colombia.
