PSV Considers Expansion of Philips Stadium to Meet Growing Demand

PSV is considering expanding the Philips Stadium. The Eindhoven club is hiring an external research agency to look at growth opportunities, general manager Marcel Brands and financial director Jaap van Baar said on Friday during the presentation of the annual figures.

The capacity of the Philips Stadium, which opened in 1910, and has been expanded several times, is 35,000 places. There is now a waiting list of nine thousand supporters who want a season ticket.

“The region is growing,” says Van Baar. “That is why we continue to look at a small expansion or a major expansion at some point.”

The current Philips Stadium can be expanded with up to two thousand places. “Then you have to think about the limited space we still have in certain places to add one or two rows of seats,” Brands said. “If you want to expand even further, the stadium really needs to be overhauled.”

Real Madrid as an example

The general manager referred to Real Madrid, which started renovating the stadium in 2019. The renovated and modern Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is now finished. Brands: “Real have thought outside the box.”

PSV prefers to stay at its current location in the city center, but does not rule out a move to a new location. The 24-time national champion first wants to wait and see what research agency Hypercube comes up with. Van Baar and Brands announced that PSV is also looking at expansion options, because the club is at its maximum in terms of income.

PSV also presented its annual figures on Friday. The Eredivisie player recorded a net profit of 13.1 million euros last season.
