Portugal Secures Narrow Victory Against Slovakia with Bruno Fernandes’ Heroic Goal

This Friday, Portugal won painfully against Slovakia (0 – 1), thanks to a goal from a very good Bruno Fernandes. Cristiano Ronaldo and Vitinha completely missed their match.

Diogo Costa (5) : The Portugal goalkeeper didn’t have much to do as the Slovaks procrastinated despite their opportunities. However, he missed twice in his clearances, including a pass that could have been fatal. When he adjusts the sights, it is immediately more pleasant and productive.

Diogo Dalot (6.5) : Starting as a right back, Dalot played his part. Good in ball releases, active in his lane and in the axis even when he tries to blow the Slovak lock. Another good performance in selection for the Mancunian.

Rúben Dias (6): He had his work cut out for him. Facing very aggressive attackers, the Manchester City defender had to show what he was for nominated for the Ballon d’Or. A few losses of ball, but overall calm in the construction phase.

António Silva (5) : Complicated to blame him as the centrals were called upon since all the Portuguese attacks started from them. However, he was guilty of an error in the 9th minute which could have given Slovakia a goal.

João Cancelo (6.5): Despite the few minutes he played this season, Cancelo managed his match perfectly. Important defensively, he was often found in a central position to start certain actions. At the hour mark, he was replaced by a good Nelson Semedo.

João Palhinha (6): Less sovereign than in his last outings, the Portuguese defensive midfielder nevertheless showed himself solid in a few interventions. When he has the ball, he struggles to deliver it quickly and cleanly.

Vitinha (4): The Parisian took advantage of his coach’s switch to 4-3-3 to start this evening. However, he was very messy with the ball and never managed to get out cleanly, by dribbling or passing. At the hour mark, he gives a good deflection ball for Cristiano Ronaldo. His only breakthrough of the match.

Bruno Fernandes (8): The best Portuguese player since the World Cup is him. This evening again, the rare Portuguese chances come from his feet. Before half-time, he himself came to celebrate his 29th birthday with a magnificent solitary goal. Man of the match without a doubt.

Rafael Leão (4.5): There are three different Rafael Leãos. The one who makes superb starts during the game with Portugal, the one who has fun at AC Milan, and the one who starts and who doesn’t make it. Against Slovakia, it was indeed its third version which was on the pitch. Some good defensive returns in the first half nonetheless.

Cristiano Ronaldo (3): Tonight, the captain of the selection missed everything. Despite several good serves, he was unable to gain the upper hand on the Slovak defense and missed two big actions. Warned for the third time in this qualifying phase, he will not be part of the match against Luxembourg.

Bernardo Silva (5.5) : A half-hearted match for the Manchester City player. A little too smug at times, he could have served Rafael Leão instead of attempting the shot from distance before half-time. Nevertheless, he initiates two great actions when he finds himself in a more central position.
