Pepe Lemos, former Celta and Valladolid player, dies at 61

This Thursday it was known the death at 61 years of age of Pepe Lemos, youth player of the Celta who defended the jacket of the first celestial team for seven seasons, between 1979 and 1986. Lemos later played for six seasons for Valladolid, a team with which achieved international status before retiring in Porriño Industrial. José Lemos Rodríguez (Salvaterra de Miño 1962, Vigo 2023) trained in the youth ranks of Celta, whose first team he joined in 1979 when he was only 17 years old, coinciding with the team’s relegation to Second Division B. He was one of the members of the team that achieved, with the help of Miroslav Pavic, promotion to First division in just two seasons. At Celta he played as a right back, but at Valladolid, for which he was a defensive reference, he ended up playing very well on the left wing. His debut with Celta in the First Division took place on September 5, 1982 when he was only 20 years old, against Sevilla at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán.

He is remembered as a powerful side, with great intensity, who compensated for his technical limitations with an irreproachable attitude. His best moments were with the Valladolid team, with which he achieved international status, although he did not play any official match with the Spanish team. Luis Suárez called him up with the national team to play in Balaídos for the tribute to José Manuel Alvelo, but then he did not have continuity.

Lemos played 170 games in the First Division, scoring two goals, both with the Pucelano set. Due to his under-23 status, he had intermittent participation with Celta and only played two seasons in the top category, playing a total of 33 games. In both Valladolid and Celta he left his mark due to his selfless attitude and the intensity with which he applied himself to the game. After leaving the Pucelano team, Lemos played for Porriño Industrial for some time before hanging up his boots.

His son David came to play for the Celta youth team and his nephew Claudio Giraldez He has been leading Celta Fortuna with notable success in the last three seasons.
