Olimpia on the pitch against Sassari in the Cagliari final

Olimpia’s third pre-season outing takes place this evening in Cagliari for the final of the tournament which will pit them against Dinamo Sassari, essentially the hosts. Yesterday Sassari beat Red Star Belgrade 76-71 leading throughout the game. It’s true that the Serbian team complained about five absences but Sassari was also in an impaired version and will be so again tonight. Coach Piero Bucchi will not have point guard Cappelletti, guard Tyree, wingers Charalampopoulos and Bendzius who played the World Cup with Lithuania. Among the new players, point guard Whitaker and center Gombauld. Among the veterans are captain Stefano Gentile, center Diop, striker Kruslin and winger Treier, who was among the best yesterday. Tap-off at 8.30pm.

Olimpia is obviously second to none when it comes to absences. In addition to the five national teams, Nicolò Melli, Pippo Ricci, Stefano Tonut, Maodo Lo and Johannes Voigtmann; as well as Billy Baron, convalescent in Milan; Diego Flaccadori was added yesterday due to a muscle strain in his left thigh which will need to be re-evaluated. Today he will certainly be absent.

With seven players out, the roster is reduced to nine elements plus Voijislav Stojanovic in the role of winger, brilliant yesterday against Asvel, and the 17-year-olds Samuele Miccoli, a point guard, and Denis Badalau, a winger. These two also played yesterday but after the game was over.

It is the third outing for Olimpia after two victories, scoring 191 points overall and always with five men in double figures. The constants have been Mirotic, Poythress and Shields. Against Derthona, Bortolani and Flaccadori; against Asvel it was Pangos and Hall’s turn.

After the match in Cagliari, Olimpia will prepare for the trip to Athens where they will face Olympiacos twice over the weekend. Subsequently, the national teams will be reunited and preparation for the Brescia Super Cup will begin.
