Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. Resumes Activities of Baseball Clubs and Plans for Future Collaborations

Mr. Sadayuki Hamaguchi, Managing Executive Officer (in charge of Global Communications Headquarters), Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

On September 12, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced that it would resume the activities of the “Nissan Motors Headquarters Baseball Club” and “Nissan Motors Kyushu Baseball Club,” which were suspended in 2009. Both teams have applied to the Japan Baseball Federation, and after receiving approval, the Kyushu Baseball Club is scheduled to begin operations in 2024, and the Headquarters Baseball Club is scheduled to begin operations in 2025.

Nissan’s baseball team is a corporate baseball team that has produced numerous professional baseball players over half a century of activity, with the head office baseball club being founded in 1959 and the Kyushu baseball club being founded in 1986. The head office baseball club, which is based in Yokosuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture, where the Oppama Factory is located, has a track record of winning the intercity baseball tournament twice and the Japan Championship once.

In addition, the Kyushu Baseball Club, which is based in Kyoto District, Fukuoka Prefecture, has been operating as a club team “Kanda Victories Baseball Club” since 2010, and of the 29 players who belong to it, 17 The team consists of members who are members of Nissan Motor Kyushu, and from 2024 the club team will be disbanded and replaced with an adult team.

Collaboration between the baseball club and Yokohama F. Marinos is also in the cards

In an online lecture held on the same day, Mr. Sadayuki Hamaguchi, Managing Executive Officer (in charge of Global Communications Headquarters) of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., provided an overview of the resumption of activities.

Mr. Hamaguchi’s goal after the activities of both baseball clubs resume is to participate in and win both the Intercity Baseball and Japan Championships, and as a corporate citizen, he also plans to hold baseball classes in the local area and participate in community baseball tournaments. He also stated that the aim is to contribute to the local community and the development of Japan’s sports culture through activities such as participation in sporting events. The team structure, including managers and players for both baseball clubs, will be announced once they are officially decided.

During a question and answer session with participating members of the press, Mr. Hamaguchi was asked to explain the significance of reviving the baseball club, which had been inactive for a long time. We are taking various measures for structural reform, and we are proceeding with what we have decided should be done, but in the end, no matter what we do, it is all done by people.A company’s assets are its people. I believe that a person’s heart and consciousness will be a very important essential part of moving forward with a business.”

“When thinking about the future of the automobile industry, we must have a corporate culture that embraces various challenges without fear of failure, and the ability to share opinions regardless of whether one is above or below. Makoto Uchida, our company’s president, is also conscious of the need to survive in these difficult times.Baseball itself is not directly related to our business, but we are trying to support the baseball team. I believe that this decision was made based on the idea that our actions would improve the awareness and change the mindset of our employees.”

Mr. Hamaguchi himself played baseball from elementary school until he graduated from university, and says he is overwhelmed with emotion to be able to make such an announcement.

The Kyushu Baseball Club, whose team structure is changing from a club team to an adult team, has been receiving support from local companies other than Nissan over the past 13 years since 2010, and this is the team’s property. He explained that he would like to make use of this even after the adult team transitions. Regarding athletes who belong to companies other than Nissan Motor Kyushu, he explained that decisions will be made after consultation with the athletes themselves and the intentions of their companies.

The headquarters baseball club has given up the ground where they practice after suspending their activities, and with no players remaining due to transfers, it will be necessary to form a new team. For this reason, the company is planning to build practice grounds and clubhouses on sites owned by Nissan, such as the Oppama Plant site in Yokosuka City.

Community contribution is not just for the baseball club alone, but as part of the company’s overall social contribution activities, such as holding baseball lessons for children who dream of the future, cooperating with sporting events held in the community, and social contribution activities. He explained that he would like to be actively involved in supporting extracurricular activities held at the school, which is an issue. The company also emphasized its desire to contribute to the local community by collaborating with Yokohama F. Marinos, a professional soccer team sponsored by Nissan, as well as collaborating and cooperating with other corporate teams.

Regarding the change in the alliance agreement with the Renault Group, he said, “This is completely unrelated.”
