Nina Derwael to Undergo Shoulder Surgery in Hopes of Returning to the Top Level of Gymnastics

Nina Derwael does not take half measures to get back to the top level.

Today, the gymnast shared the news on her Instagram that she will have surgery on her shoulder this weekend. “The operation is scheduled for Saturday,” it said.

“I’m already dreaming of being able to swing again,” she concluded under a training video of hers.

Our compatriot injured herself two weeks ago during training. While jumping off the parallel bars, her shoulder dislocated, forcing her to cross herself at the World Championships in Antwerp (September 30 – October 8).

Yet another setback this year. In April she also had to pass for the European Championships in Turkey with a shoulder injury.

Nina Derwael was aiming for a 5th World Championship medal in Antwerp, a 3rd gold. In 2018 and 2019 she won the world title on the uneven bars, the event she also won two years ago at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Later in the evening, Gymfed provided additional information: “After consultation with the medical staff and various shoulder specialists, surgical intervention appeared to be the only option.”

“Only after the procedure will it become clearer what the rehabilitation will look like. This will be evaluated week by week. It is currently too early to make any statements about moving or loading her shoulder again.”

“Nina will in any case have to undergo a primary rehabilitation period of 3 months.” She wants to defend her title at the Olympic Games in Paris (July 26-August 11).
