Nina Derwael is having an unlucky year. In April she had to pass for the European Championships in Turkey with a shoulder injury. Now the 23-year-old gymnast has won again.
Yesterday Derwael injured himself during training in Ghent. While jumping off the parallel bars, her shoulder dislocated, forcing her to cross herself at the World Championships in Antwerp (September 30 – October 8).
“It is a childhood dream that is falling apart,” the Olympic champion responds, deeply disappointed. “At the moment it is still difficult to grasp.”
Derwael promises to be present at the Sportpaleis. “Just like in 2013, I will be sitting in the stands,” she concludes her message.

Nina Derwael was aiming for a 5th World Championship medal in Antwerp, a 3rd gold. In 2018 and 2019 she won the world title on the uneven bars, the event she also won two years ago at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
“She is dealing with it very well,” says Ruben Neyens of Gymfed, “but of course she is very disappointed.”
“Nina was raising her level and wanted to show herself in front of her own audience. She was really looking forward to the World Cup in Antwerp and talked about it every day.”

Lisa Vaelen will also not be on the mat at the World Championships in Antwerp. The 19-year-old gymnast is struggling with glandular fever.
“Obviously this is a setback,” Vaelen responds.
“The glandular fever has come at a bad time. We have been working towards the World Cup for months and I am extremely sorry to have to miss this match.”
Vaelen was there at the European Championships in April. She jumped to bronze in Turkey.

Vaelen and Derwael are now focusing on their recovery and then focusing on the upcoming, important Olympic season.
