Nico Elvedi Set to Extend Contract at Mönchengladbach Following Failed Transfer

Actually, his departure from Mönchengladbach was already a done deal. The planned transfer to England fell apart; Now Nico Elvedi is about to extend his contract on the Lower Rhine.

Wolverhampton Wanderers had been trying for a long time to bring Swiss national defender Nico Elvedi to the Premier League. But the deal fell apart, even though everything seemed clear.

The further course of action in Mönchengladbach, however, was clear. Either leave or extend the contract, manager Roland Virkus gave the central defender this alternative. And now? Recently, Elvedi was largely left out; Of course, this also damages his role in the Swiss national team with a view to the European Championships next year.

Elvedi stayed out completely during the Swiss international match in Kosovo on Saturday (2:2). It will therefore be important for him to gain match practice at a high level in order to be remembered for the European Championships.

His contract expires in 2024, which is also why the regular player of the past few years has been left out recently. He wasn’t part of the Gladbach squad on the first two matchdays and only came onto the pitch as a joker against Bayern in the last few minutes.

The further procedure has been clearly communicated to the Elvedi side: It is to be expected that Gerardo Seoane will largely forego the player – if he does not extend his contract, which it apparently looks like.

An extension until 2025 is in the offing

“It’s clear that the club absolutely wants to avoid a deserving player just walking through the door at the end of the season,” Seoane told the Bild newspaper. Elvedi is under pressure to extend his contract if he wants to continue to play regularly at Borussia. There is apparently talk of an extension until 2025, then certainly including an exit clause.

The Swiss, who has been playing in Mönchengladbach since 2015, has emphasized more than once that he feels extremely well looked after at Borussia. His desire to move to England, where he would have improved significantly financially, was understandable. Of course, a turnaround cannot be ruled out.

So far, the 26-year-old has always been very loyal to his club, does his job extremely reliably, and although he rarely played outstandingly, he rarely played below average.

As an extremely reliable support, Elvedi could fight for his place back in the team, but of course on the condition that he actually signs his new contract. In purely sporting terms, that would be a way out of the dead end for him. First of all, it can be assumed that he will remain out for the time being in the game against newly promoted Darmstadt 98 on Sunday.

Nicolas is probably in goal

In the meantime, it is becoming increasingly clear that Moritz Nicolas, who made great saves against Bayern, will also be number 1 on Sunday as a replacement for regular goalkeeper Jonas Omlin, who injured his shoulder.

Coach Seoane actually wanted and wants to leave the competition between Moritz Nicolas and competitor Jan Olschowsky open for a long time and not commit to a clear number 1. But because Olschowsky missed training on Tuesday due to illness, it is obvious that Nicolas will also be in the Gladbach team on Sunday.
