New station starts broadcasting the NFL on TV

The RTL Group will be the successor to ProSiebenSat.1 as a football broadcaster this weekend. The new rights holder will show almost 80 games per season until 2028, most of them at no additional cost on the main broadcaster RTL. There are NFL games on RTL+ and DAZN for a fee.

Games at RTL: The first live broadcast of the so-called regular season on free TV this Friday at 2:20 a.m. is the game of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs against the Detroit Lions. The core of the new sports project of the Cologne-based private broadcaster are the Sundays, on which two games are shown at 7 p.m. and 10:25 p.m. in the main program on RTL. First up is the Cincinnati Bengals versus the Cleveland Browns and later the Miami Dolphins versus the Los Angeles Chargers.
Games on RTL+: One game per weekend runs exclusively on the streaming portal RTL+. This has to be paid for and costs EUR 6.99 per month. For customers there is the Carolina Panthers vs. Atlanta Falcons game on Sunday.
The staff: Football fans know some of the RTL staff because they previously worked at ProSiebenSat.1, such as presenter Jan Stecker. Jana Wosnitza came from Sport1. Commentators include Frank Buschmann, Florian Schmidt-Sommerfeld and Patrick Esume. Former football professionals such as Björn Werner, Markus Kuhn and Sebastian Vollmer are on duty as experts.
DAZN: There is even more NFL on the internet broadcaster DAZN. The football offer is included in the Super Sports package for EUR 19.99 per month. In addition to an exclusive game in prime time, there is a German-speaking and a US conference called RedZone. The most extensive package is available via the NFL Game Pass, which costs 171.99 euros for the entire season.

San Francisco 49ers make Bosa the highest-paid defenseman in the NFL

Four days before the first NFL game, the San Francisco 49ers ended Nick Bosa’s contract poker game, making him the highest-paid defenseman in league history. As US media reported on Wednesday, the 49ers and their most important defensive professional agreed on a five-year contract with a volume of 170 million US dollars (almost 159 million euros). The $34 million annual average exceeds Aaron Donald’s $31.7 million at the Los Angeles Rams and the $122.5 million guarantee exceeds the $102 million which Nick Bosa’s older brother Joey gets from the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bosa had missed large parts of the preparation due to the lack of agreement, but according to coach Kyle Shanahan he should be used on Sunday. The 49ers begin their National Football League season away with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Before NFL start, St. Brown is elected captain of the Detroit Lions

Amon-Ra St. Brown has been selected to captain the Detroit Lions ahead of the NFL’s start of the season. This was announced by head coach Dan Campbell two days before the duel with Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs (2:20 a.m. CEST Friday / RTL and DAZN). The 23-year-old German-American, like quarterback Jared Goff, is one of five Lions football pros who will wear the captain’s patch on their jersey.

St. Brown is entering his third NFL season and is now one of the most important professionals on the Lions roster. He recovered from his ankle injury before the start of the season. “Everything is fine, everything is okay now,” he told the German Press Agency. The passport recipient suffered a slight ligament strain during training in mid-August. Since last week he has been fully involved in the units again, he said.

RTL conquers the NFL: New era of US sports on German television – everyone is “on fire”

The tears over the loss of the NFL have now dried at ProSiebenSat.1. And some of the staff quickly followed the football rights and is now working for competitor RTL, which is starting its TV experiment this week. With US sports, the broadcasting group wants to attract particularly sought-after viewers to the main program in prime time.

The anticipation can be seen in RTL sports director Andreas von Thien when he talks about the new NFL project. “We have shown again and again that we can make sports bigger and more important,” said the long-time RTL journalist of the German Press Agency. “This is how we made boxing, Formula 1 and ski jumping attractive to the general public.”

For various reasons, RTL no longer has boxing, Formula 1 and ski jumping in its program for a long time. With football, however, should now be linked to more successful times with an audience of millions. “When we tackled something, we did it with all our power across all channels,” said von Thien, adding: “Then there’s an incredibly high chance that it will work.”

The first live broadcast of the so-called regular season is this Friday at 2:20 a.m. the game of the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs against the Detroit Lions. The core of the new sports project of the Cologne-based private broadcaster are the Sundays, on which two games are shown at 7 p.m. and 10:25 p.m. on RTL. Reaches such as Sunday, when 1.48 million watched the film “Cruella” can be beaten.

“The entire company has been on fire for the NFL for almost a year, and we are very happy that everyone is going along with it,” said the RTL sports director. “We set up a new editorial team for this and, and that was an important step, brought additional NFL expertise in-house.”

In fact, RTL accessed the staff of the replaced NFL broadcaster. Moderator Jan Stecker was the first to change, but other RTL employees such as commentator Frank Buschmann and Patrick Esume or the former football professionals Björn Werner, Markus Kuhn or Sebastian Vollmer also have a ProSiebenSat.1 past. There they had helped to popularize US sport in recent years.

In the TV scene, American football is considered the number two team sport for young audiences after football. This is important in the fight for advertising revenue for television stations. RTL wants to use this interest of the young with its prominent team of experts and the concept of free TV, streaming offers and audio formats. “And with everything that goes with it: drama, show, money and big cars,” RTL Managing Director Stephan Schmitter said at a presentation. The broadcasting group is allowed to show around 80 live broadcasts per season by 2028. They run on the main channel, but also on the small free TV channel Nitro and on the paid streaming platform RTL+.

RTL is now benefiting from the pioneering work of ProSiebenSat.1. Since the start in 2012, the broadcasting group has massively increased the number of live broadcasts and has repeatedly set ratings records with the sometimes idiosyncratic reporting about figures such as Christoph “Icke” Dommisch. “The emotional grief continues to this day,” said sports director Alexander Rösner before the last Super Bowl. In the meantime, Rösner ProSiebenSat.1. left and now works for Sky.

Three German professionals with squad place at their NFL-Teams

Three German football professionals have earned a place in their NFL teams. Brothers Amon-Ra St. Brown (Detroit Lions) and Equanimeous St. Brown (Chicago Bears) are also in their teams’ 53-man roster, as is Jakob Johnson (Las Vegas Raiders). On the other hand, Marcel Dabo from Reutlingen did not make it with the Indianapolis Colts, as can be seen from the list published on the team’s homepage. All teams had to reduce their squads to 53 players on Tuesday (local time).

Dabo can theoretically be signed by another team, but it is more likely that he will initially get a contract for the training squad from the Colts. From the training squad, promotion to the active match day squad is also possible during the course of the season. Kilian Zierer (Houston Texans) and David Bada (Washington Commanders) are both injured and stuck in rehab for the coming months.

Damar Hamlin also made it into the 53 squad for the Buffalo Bills. The defender suffered cardiac arrest last season and was placed in a coma. He made his comeback for the Bills in pre-season and is now scheduled to stand in for safety Micah Hyde.

The NFL season begins on September 7 with the game between Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions for the younger of the NFL active St. Brown brothers. The Bears with Equanimeous

St. Brown is injured in Detroit Lions practice before the start of the season

Amon-Ra St. Brown injured his ankle the first time his Detroit Lions trained with NFL competitor Jacksonville Jaguars and had to end the session early. The problems arose on Wednesday after the pass recipient caught the pass in a seven-a-side training game, the US news agency AP reported. St. Brown needed support when leaving the field and then tried to run out of the pain, but did not come back onto the field. At first there was no further information.

St. Brown is entering his third NFL season and is one of the Lions’ most important football pros. The new season begins on September 7 with the Lions’ game against Super Bowl winners Kansas City Chiefs. Even more than in the past, teams complete training sessions with other teams in preparation and often use their most important players very little or only briefly in the friendlies.

RTL goes into the regular season of the NFL with Super Bowl winner Kansas

A little over three weeks before the start of the regular season in the North American professional football league, RTL presented its broadcasting concept for broadcasts from the NFL. In addition, the free TV broadcaster named the first ten games on Thursday that will be shown on RTL and the paid streaming service RTL +. The RTL Group’s free-to-air TV station Nitro is currently running games for the preseason.

The so-called regular season starts on September 8 (Friday, 2:20 a.m.) with Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs against the Detroit Lions. The season opening game can be seen on RTL. On the following three Sundays (10.9., 17.9., 24.9.), two prime-time games will be shown at 7.00 p.m. and 10.25 p.m. on RTL and one game each exclusively at 7.00 p.m. on RTL+.

In the future, the run-up to the games will be available on Sundays in the free area on the streaming platform RTL+. From 6.15 p.m. the moderators of RTL and RTL+ report together. From 7 p.m. onwards, the RTL+ crew will be in their own studio.

The RTL Group surprisingly secured an extensive NFL rights package last year, replacing ProSiebenSat.1. According to the Cologne broadcasting group, the free-to-air channels RTL and Nitro and the paid streaming service RTL+ offer around 80 live broadcasts per season. The fee-based Internet broadcaster DAZN also has an extensive NFL package.
